Hard to believe this is the first time.....

*Spoilers* of course.....

It's hard for me to believe that this is the first time that something went wrong. I suppose we technically can't be sure whether or not previous couples retreat did not go as planned, but Sophia 2 seemed to imply that this was an unusual case of something going wrong. I'm sure I'm over analyzing, but there has to be thousands of possibilities in such a scenario, which would/could lead to thousands of unintended consequences.

Had this been my wife and I, (I highly doubt she would have been fooled by my doppelganger), and we were sitting in the diner planning our next move as they were midway through the movie, we would have either A. gotten the police involved or B. went home and gone after the Doctor.

However, think of all the other possibilities of how this could have gone wrong: Murder, threesome sexual activity, foursome sexual activity, all four getting along and trying to leave simultaneously, further confusion of who is who, etc.

I guess I just find it impossible believe that this would work successfully at all. I did, however, enjoy this movie.

I agree with you, but don't forget that Sophie2 is not necessarily knowledgable about the retreat's true history. Most likely all Sophie2 knows is her own experience with (whatever couple was trapped there before her and Ethan2), plus whatever the therapist told her -- and the therapist might well have papered any past fiascos.

If we're going with the assumption that the same set of dopplegangers stays and transforms with each new couple (ie the voice modulations/practice Ethan1 dug out of the computer's trash) maybe they just got to the point where they wanted to leave the estate, and instead of sticking to the "therapist's" rules, Male2 and Female2 exposed themselves after staying in character and tricking dozens of couples before them. It definitely seemed like at their core they had evolved into finally ready to expose themselves then attempt to leave the grounds.

One of the reasons I love this movie is that there are a lot more questions than answers, but it still simultaneously felt very fulfilling.

I don't share that assumption. I took it as each couple only staying there through one cycle--so the expectation was that E1 and S1 would stay and impersonate the next couple and then leave, and that couple would impersonate the couple after them, and so on. Seems like some old myth or fairy tale although I am drawing a blank as to what specifically.

I took it as each couple gets trapped then has to leave when the next couple arrives too. And they each begin a new life as new people

We shant be telling mother about this shant we?

As new people compared to when they came in, but pretending to be the same couple that they replaced, you mean? Seems like there would be a strong temptation to go talk to close friends or family.

I definitely read it as them getting new lives as well, not that they would change back to their old selves, renewed after their experience tricking and trapping the next couple. (it's why Ethan 2 was calling around asking questions about Ethan 1, like where they lived and so on so forth.)

I think you just have to suspend the disbelief on the whole close friends and family thing.

Interesting. Any thoughts about their origins or Ted Danson's role?
