I wanted to like this, maybe it'll get better

Most shows start out bad, but I would say it could only be better in the sense that it delivers more laughs. So I think I'll give it another shot, at the moment its a 4 or 5, if it gets more funny it can be a 6 or 7. I think the biggest issue is writing and directing, the actors probably didn't have much good writing to work with but in that pilot they just aren't delivering it well either. Its too much like a 90s sitcom, feeling wise.

Yeah uneasy is the perfect word, partly I think its him playing his character. Martin Short and the Elliott Gould are the only upsides to this, clearly because they are experienced. I think the show really needs fresh jokes and some better directing, having Martin Short is a very big gift.

Yeah, there is potential. It is not like *beep* my Dad says", which, a few minutes in, you realise "Nope, never gonna be any better", or most shows by Chuck Lorre, which are doomed from the moment of conception.

I think Mulaney wants the show to be a nineties-style sitcom, ala the ones he and a lot of us in our late twenties and early thirties grew up with. A homage to/parody of. But they are not entirely pulling it off. It probably needs time to grow into its own. Not that I think it will get it, Fox do like their cancellations of promising shows. It is like their trademark.

90s sitcom is exactly what I feel, its like a Tyler Perry show but even those are better. It just seems like something that they just quickly shot. As if the director rushed it and didn't make them redo the scenes. Makes me think Lorne Michaels is not involved. It looks like a CW or local show, not like something on Fox, I'm guessing this show has a very low budget. The writing needed to changed and that director should have made them redo a lot of scenes, and guide them.

According to this week's Entertainment Weekly, viewers should stick it out through the first couple of episodes, since it gets much better by the third episode.

I have no clue why shows do that, a bad pilot nearly kills a show and a bad 2nd episode will definitely end it. Its possible it will last if it picks up on episode 3.

EW blamed it on the extensive explaining that the show has to do to set up the backstory and framework.

I've been watching it and it still sucks hard.

I stopped watching after about 4 or 5 episodes, if a show is still bad at that point its not changing. Really a show is pretty much there by episode 3 or 4, especially comedies. The 1st episode of a comedy is pretty much the intro part, after that you kinda know what the show is.
