Is it really as bad as the critics suggest?

I really do want to see it because I loved the first but the 3% on RT kinda scares me.

I gave it a 7, Husband gave it a 5.

Lots of missed potential in the story, but there were quite a few things that I liked - I also enjoyed the creativity of the death tapes and the psychological aspect of things with the brothers vs the bogool murderkids.

I would recommend it as a horror fan. No, it's not as good as the first. Yes it did answer some questions, but I have lots more LOL.

Clearly there will be another movie.

If YOU want to see it then go see it. Don't let bald guys in suits tell you what you will or will not like. You are not them. You are you. And you... Should see Sinister 2.

reply

Thank you, Droid. Just see it because you wanna see it. Don't worry about who else likes it or not.

I'm telling you, I just cannot believe that low RT score and bad reviews I've read. Actually, I can't remember the last time I disagreed so much with the critics. Everyone in my theater and people I've talked to really enjoyed it. Not the greatest horror movie ever, but still a pretty solid little flick, I thought. 3% is unbelievably ridiculous; Seen many more movies with better scores that weren't nearly as good as this.

I finally saw it and yeah, I liked it. It had a lot of problems but it was a very solid sequel.

I did think some of the story was uneven and forced, but it did have character, believable dialog, story, scares, and tension. I thought the critics were a bit too harsh on this one.

reply

I like that S2 avoided having the jump scares aimed at the audience instead of the characters within the movie. The S1 jump scares took me out of the movie because they made no sense.

reply

In my opinion, it truly is as bad as the critics suggest.

I loved the first Sinister. It's one of my favorite horror films of the past five years. But I was highly disappointed with this sequel. There was just no tension or scares. One of my favorite aspect of the first movie -- the score -- was really weak in this sequel. None of the music added to the sense of dread. And the surprise "twist" about 3/4 of the way through the movie was so obvious you could see it coming from a mile away .I'm finding it hard to think of anything positive about Sinister 2.

reply

Honestly, my main positives were that it was pretty much just fun/watchable and I actually really liked the characters.

I'll agree it was watchable. I didn't like any of the kid characters, though.

Just wanted to give you props, Tim. Really well said and I felt the same way about this film as you did, I presume. The first film is easily in my top 5 horror movies of the last 5-10 years. It was just very unique, excelled at creating a creepy atmosphere throughout and had a fairly shocking twist at the end with the "final cuts" of the film. It wasn't perfect by any means but was a great film in the genre. Unfortunately, the "surprise" was spoiled by the first film, so the sequel was forced to get creative to bring anything novel to the table. I feel the writers' largest failure was in this respect at least in terms of living up to the quality established in the first film.

And thank you for mentioning the music! It was so underrated how well it fit in the first film and how the transitions were handled from "happy home movie" to "terrifying snuff film". Man, that particular cue from the BBQ/car one will haunt my dreams for the rest of my days, lol.

reply

well it's at a 12% now on RT if that means anything lol. I don't always trust them humbug critics, but they are usually right except they were waayyy off on the Poltergeist remake which I loooved. Maybe more so cause most critics hated it, I dunno. I still have yet to see this one though.

I was also hesitant to see this, but I really enjoyed it. As for the end, which makes it look like Baghuul is going to get Ex-Deputy So-and-So, I like to head-canon that he'll figure something out and win in the end.

I gave it a 6. Just about everything good it had to offer was derivative from the first movie. It fleshed some things out in regards to the kids and Baghul himself. And overall it added more of a traditional plot with some some zany Deputy So and So humor, none of which improved anything imo.

The snuff vids started out okay but they got tiresome by the end, and the last one with the rats was a silly concept that was borrowed from some other recent movie. 3/4 of the way through I was ready for it to be done.

Still, if you enjoyed the original, I'd recommend seeing this as it serves as a bit of a blast from the past while at the same time making you appreciate just how great the first one was.

I liked the movie but didn't find it scary at all. Fiancé said the same thing. They do the same thing with every sequel; make it too stylized and show the "bad guy" too much. The first was very simple and effective, they overdo a lot in the second (too much baghoul, too much ghost kids, etc). And I didn't think the murder tapes were that effective...

I finally saw the movie. Usually I defend these sequels and think people complain too much about them, but this really was soo average. I gave it a 4/10 at least cause some parts made me jump and I kinda liked parts of the ending, but it was just entirely a lazy carbon copy of the first but without the soul there. Pass on this one for sure.
