Rutabaga! RUTABAGA!

Did anyone else crack up at that part? It was supposed to be dramatic but ended up being pretty comical. So the mom established that was the word they would use when it was time to run. So she said the word, they knew to run and they were in the process of running, and yet she still felt the need to shout the word again across the store and call more attention to them. It was just silly.

My little sister and I nearly got kicked out of the theater laughing at that lady shouting rutabaga. 😅

That scene was too funny. I almost got thrown out of a friends house for something similar a year ago. My friend is a big fan of the old HBO WW2 War series Band of Brothers and has been trying to get me to see them for years. He has a movie room:big screen, multi levels of reclining seats etc. 10 other who loved that series were there. Anyway, they had a scene in the show where the platoon or whatever are sleeping in the woods. Suddenly deafening bombs are going off everywhere. Huge trees are being splintered, debris flying. Its brighter than day from the flashes. Everyone is already scrambling for their weapons and taking cover. And what is the main guy doing as this is happening?? He is screaming over and over: "INCOMING!!!!INCOMING!!!!. From that point on I couldnt stop laughing and had to leave the movie room and go to his fully stocked bar room to recompose.... Some unintentional humor scenes are priceless...
I see you are a Straub fan. One of the most under rated horror films I think is Ghost Story.

I love Ghost Story, and Full Circle as well (it's based on Straub's novel 'Julia'). Great films :)

OMG that was hilarious! Saying it once was alright but then while in the process of running......seriously had to pause the movie I was laughing so hard.

I kind of laughed thinking of how it would look to random shoppers at the store. Imagine if you're shopping and then a lady just randomly shouts "rutabaga" two times for no apparent reason and then starts running through the store with her kids. I'd be so confused. I'd probably think it was one of those prank videos like on YouTube. Watching the movie it makes sense but from an outsider's point of view it would be very strange. Still a very good movie, though.

Would've been funny if an employee shouted back "Aisle 3, ma'am!"

reply

Omg, that would have been too hilarious!

I think it was intended to be comical, that she was using a silly code word instead of just telling them to run.

reply

What I didn't understand was why have a code-word at all?

It'd make sense if she engaged the guy in a conversation, and brought up Rutabegas so the kids knew to get away. Or sent the kids to get the "Rutabegas", and the kids got the hell out of the store or something while the guy thought they were just going to get some produce.

But if you're running while shouting your code-word to run, what the *beep* is the point of it being a code-word!? He isn't going to be confused or anything, "Oh *beep* they're running... but she's saying Rutabega? So I guess they aren't actually trying to escape!" doesn't exactly fly as a justification.

It's like having a safe with the combination written on the front of it. You aren't fooling anyone.
