I don't know where they'll be shooting this movie, but Hollywood, with all its special effects and all, still can't get Iran right! I mean, Syriana, Argo, you name it...they've done a terrible job at depicting Tehran. I mean, it's funny cause they can make Pandora look real as s#it, but when it comes to Tehran, these guys are blundering idiots all of a sudden lol

reply

I've been to Tehran, hideous_stranger. I don't agree with you about Argo. Argo had it's problems (climactic runway chase? WTH?!) but depicting Tehran wasn't one of them. What they had cleverly done was to shoot a lot of close-ups and medium shots filling the frame with faces and leaving out a lot of the background. What remained to be viewed did remind one of some areas of Tehran, albeit the less modern parts.

But a great example for your point would be "Not Without My Daughter." The Tehran shown in that movie had no resemblance whatsoever to the real Tehran. I mean coming out of the airport and looking at palm trees in the 'Tehran' backdrop was criminal and a testimony to the ineptness of the filmmakers.

The one thing Argo did right was put up a CGI image of Tehran's Alborz mountain range in the background. This can be seen in the hotel-room scenes. The close-ups were smart, but the problem was with the cars (mostly models which were not found in Tehran at the time) and the street signs. Also, the people chanting outside the embassy were holding signs that were typed fonts (!) on rags. If they'd bothered to look closer at footage from the time, they'd have seen that the slogans were painted in calligraphic forms! But you know what they say...the devil is in the details!

Let's just see what Jon Stewart will manage to do with his budget!

I was in Amman when they were shooting. A student of mine was an extra. I have just begun watching the film but already recognize the Queen Alia airport
