Hashtags in films now? God help us.

The hashtag montage has to be the cheapest, most amateur move ever in the history of cinema. Nothing like a mess of #'s floating around the screen to remind you that you're watching a low budget mess.

Out of curiosity, what do you think they should've done visually to convey the idea that so much was being conveyed through social media? A voiceover saying "Iranians took to social media following the controversy"?

Anything would have been better. It could have easily been added in dialogue for example. The way they did it felt like a low budget made for tv movie that you might be watching on ABC Family or Lifetime.

Eh, you're just anti-Jon Stewart all around. How would it be added in dialogue? Have a bunch of people say "look what I just tweeted"? Yes, it's low-budget but the movie wasn't about special effects. I just watched Ex Machina a couple of nights ago and it had similar effects. Did it take away from the movie? Not at all. It's a dumb thing to pick on really.
