Just horrible! Bad everything.

This has got to be one of the words movies I've ever seen. The acting, the dialog, the directing looks like a 1960s high school play. They must have had everyone involved with the movie vote 10 to get a 6.4 because every critic I've seen panned it (rotten tomatoes gave it a 9 out of 100)

Agreed. A wealth of rich history about a fascinating character ruined by an amatuerish production.

You haven't seen many movies if this is one of the "words" [sic] movies you've ever seen. True, it had some awkward moments but it also had some effective character moments. Hemingway's works have always had a difficult transition to the screen but now it would seem that even his life also proves to be a tough adaptation.

You're al wrong and so are the critics. The film was fine, and Sparks' performance towering.

reply

Howard Hawks succeeded magnificently in his adaptation of TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Also, Tracy's THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA is very good.

Easily the most wrong-headed short-sighted review I've read on imdb, and I've read plenty of 'em.
