Filmed in Cold Spring, NY (Upstate) - lived across from the area!

Okay, so this movie was stupendously bad from beginning to end. Horrible acting, excessive plot holes/loose ends, and although low-budget the CGI could've been much better (think of the first Paranormal Activity movie and the director/writers' innovative special effects).

With that being said, I really adore how this movie was filmed in upstate NY right at the heart of the small town Cold Spring (and other areas in proximity)! I went to college at West Point, across the Hudson River from Cold Spring, and I immediately recognized the town the protagonists were walking down in the very beginning. I especially and intimately know the pier and bench they sat at when first pitching the idea of the Typhoid Mary documentary. In fact, I've sat on that EXACT bench many times before, celebrated 4th of July there one year, and ate a couple of times at the Hudson House Inn restaurant (visible behind them and to the left of the gazebo; serves great turnover bread!). You can quite nearly see West Point (United States Military Academy) behind them in certain shots, but I could tell they were avoiding its appearance - not sure whether they intended to "double for NYC borough" with this setting.

I couldn't quite figure out the island they kept revisiting that had all the building ruins and supposedly abandoned asylum. I wasn't sure if they got permission to film on Constitution Island, though I don't recall many demolished old buildings there that closely situated by the coast.

Not enough small movies take full advantage of the Cold Spring and Garrison areas. I hope more major studios realize its potential.

P.S. I still don't fully understand the blonde chick's evil scheme. So she uses the dead spirit of her half-sister to seduce/lure/possess men/women to the asylum so her immortal half-sibling can siphon off the victims' youth to stay young? So is she a witch or physical embodiment of another spirit? I realize it was meant to be pretty straightforward, but it felt a little forced and cliched.

Thanks for the info--I wish we knew more about the dilapidated buildings and boats along the coast, though. There were some beautiful shots in this movie!
