Thanks for the post... I was curious if it had laugh track and now I'm not even going to watch the pilot.

And I laugh more at Modern Family and other non laugh track comedies than I do Big Bang Theory.

And Modern Family and Parks and Recreation and The Office all use visual cues of pausing and staring at the camera to let you know when to laugh. It's slightly more subtle than a laugh track but it serves the exact same purpose.

Omg I hate the visual cues but I still like the shows. I despise those stupid visual cues. It's like they're breaking the 4th wall almost. There are single cam non laugh track shows that actually don't even use the visual cues at all.

reply

They look at the camera at certain moments. Like, to be saying, "can you believe this?". They don't look at the camera EVERY time something humorous is spoken or done. Laugh tracks are obnoxious when they are over-used in shows like this that aren't even funny..

I didn't really feel like piling into this debate, but, Modern Family is supposed to be a mock-documentary (I never quite grasped why they're being filmed) so looking at the camera does have a breath of an excuse when they do that. It's not actually "breaking the fourth wall" as others have claimed, as long as we buy into the cameras being part of their lives. It's just the play-within-the-play having a jump-cut moment. The episodes of The Office US that I saw seemed to play that camera awareness game a lot better than Modern Family does.

My personal take on the laugh track thing is that if you notice the laugh track in a comedy that much then it's a big pile of hot mess and, chances are, the writers are giving you low-ball laughs anyway. It should take less than the first segment to know that the series isn't for your kind. On the other hand, if you don't generally notice the canned laughs because you're laughing anyway, then congratulations - it's a match made in seventh heaven. Enjoy a guilt-free pleasure.

The laugh track or "sweetening" began as a post production method to adjust the viewing flow of multi-camera comedies that are edited from several different takes where the live studio audience will have obviously laughed less enthusiastically by the sixth take or so during a long day of taping. There used to be a master craftsman who did about ninety percent of all the "sweetening" for Hollywood sitcoms and he's probably retired or departed long ago. Now, it's probably being done by random sound engineer people who just don't have the gift for the art of sweetening the soundtrack.

The result is like 1980s fast food - too much sugar and/or too much Aspartame.

- I'll have a big salad. I'll pay for the big salad but only bring me about half, in a medium-sized bowl. Thanks. ...Oh, and a large curly fries too.

- She's definitely gonna spit in your Thousand Island now!

Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.

I barely even noticed. I laughed when stuff was funny. People make too big a deal out of laugh tracks. smh

Fine. I'll make a big deal out of people using an acronym for "shaking my head" instead.

Just lazy-speak. You're not on Twitter. If you can't be bothered to type full words for everything then get somebody else to type for you.

Our society is an absolute joke due to Twitter.

reply

Sir, you have gone off topic. I don't see what Twitter or "lazy speak" has to do with Friends With Better Lives? You sound angry and bitter, I could recommend someone for you talk with, to make you feel better.

Back on topic, laugh track or not, a funny show is STILL a funny show and the same type of thing can be said for a unfunny show. A laugh track does not make or break a show, the acting and the writing do. I find the show pretty funny.

I recall the immortal words of Socrates when he said, "I drank what?"

reply

I agree I laugh when I want, and am capable of going through my own emotions through the show. I dont feel like its over done if I havent even noticed it.

reply

Totally agree with the OP. Laugh tracks are just plain cheesy. And do people really need a cue for when a joke is said or a show needs the sound of people laughing to demonstrate how funny it is?

But either way, it's just plain cheesy.

Life's too short to make others shorter

reply

And the best part is when these "Laughers" don't get the joke, or they start laughing prematuraly, when the joke isnt complete, and when the punchline comes everyone is quiet :D

I really hate laugh tracks, do producers think people are so stupid that they don't know when something is funny ? Its like rape, only worse.

reply

Big Bang isn't set to a laugh track. It's recorded in front of a live audience. how I Met Your Mother had to be done in front of actual people but recording their laughter at each episode because of the quick cuts to different scenes

reply

When you've watched the genius that is "Mrs Browns Boys" filmed entirely on set in front of a live studio audience - laugh tracks are too obvious and cut in to the show.

Mrs Browns Boys is like being in a theatre but with more leg room.

reply

Yeah No way this show lasts. I didn’t laugh once.
