Take lessons from real military humor

Seriously. They could have done a whole show based on "Bob on the Fob" ideas. Or stuff like "Terminal Lance". Both of which absolutely DECIMATE the military, without being completely stupid and insulting to life in uniform. Srs.

Absolute bullshiat. F" you Fox!

Wow. So... Didn't like it, huh?

reply

Hahahaha yea no. And, I feel like telling people I don't like it. :D

I just saw Terminal Lance's new strip and blog about it. Even Maximillian says "it's a show for civilians by civilians"

That much is obvious I guess.

I can't believe the creator and everyone involved thinks its respectful, not that I hold the Army sacred in anyway shape or form.

It's just too stupid to be respectful.

I see where you are coming from, but from a strictly civilian perspective, I actually found myself having a lot of respect for what Rear Detachment Units do (I am aware that 99.9% of this is NOT realistic of what they do), as it's not at all an idea I was familiar with. The idea that there is a Unit that has to be placed at the main command post as support staff was completely foreign to me, but I see a need for it. It should be respected, and the few glimpses of moments in which some type of possible realism is shown, those moments allow me to cultivate a certain amount of respect for people who serve their country in a capacity that is both not necessarily ideal, nor is it particularly "glamorous" (in the old fashion sense of the "solider off to war" trope). All of that came from simply watching a ridiculous sitcom about three brothers in the military.
I can understand where there is some perceived disrespect, but I think the mockery and humor in this helps foster more respect, at least for my perspective.

I agree, I actually heard about it on Terminal Lance and wanted to take a look at it. There were just to many details that were so far off, it completely killed my belief that this was a unit in the military.

I know what you mean. It's the same reason that I hate shows like McHales Navy. Lots of details off in that one (the PT boat was 10 feet shorter than a real one) and not realistic portrait of a Naval unit during WWII. F-Troop was bad too, especially in the details of what a Calvary unit in the west was really like, not to mention that the uniforms were away off. Hogan's Heros? Don't even get me started on that one. The prisoners looked too well fed and where were the gas chambers? How can anyone like shows like that when they get simple details so wrong.

I think you mean a "cavalry" unit, unless you're talking about a unit near the site of the crucifixion of Christ.

I'm just expressing my opinion.

You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

Umm. . . there wouldn't be gas chambers in a prisoner of war camp. You must be thinking of the concentrations camps.

It still completely boggles my mind that people, without fail, incessantly think that television is, in any way, real.

It owes you nothing based on reality, since it's NOT reality. It is a 2D, moving picture version of someones creative expression... or ART (usually devoid and vacuous but still, art).

People, they have proven, are mostly lemmings... get a little discernment on the world, huh?

I agree.

I also think it's ridiculous to think that anything (especially in fantasy land) needs to be "respectable" of the military.

It's a fictional comedy.

reply

I think that we all understand that it is total fiction, but some people would prefer it to be more respectful to the troops.

It's all about personal preference, not about total accuracy of the fictional work of art.

It's a TV sitcom comedy.

Relax Tinkerbell.

I like this show. I see it as today's M*A*S*H. It takes reality, puts an over the top spin on it and runs. There are elements of today's actual military, but that is NOT the focus. It's fun. As a spouse of an active duty military man (over ten years of living this)- I know when the show pokes fun, when it makes a real point and when they just want to have fun. And I like it. Service is not all GRRRR WAR, REGULATIONS! or even SCREW THE SYSTEM. The show seems to know that. It is not a documentary, nor is it total "hurr durr soldiers are like so duuuuuuumb." I look forward to a second season.
