For a moment I thought this movie was serious

I don't mean to sound offensive but this is pure propaganda. Nothing wrong with that per se but as a film experience it falls really short. The script is so simplistic I had to laugh a few times. All the Christians are the good guys and the Atheists are the bad guys. Too Hallmarkish for my taste.
Undeveloped onedimensional characters. Even the dude from Duck Dynasty made an appearance! Nothing wrong with that either I actually find the show funny. I was dissapointed because I had the expectation of watching an actual film which was a promising premise from the synopsis (teacher/student feud over religion? I was all in for that) but the exectution was downright mediocre and preachy.

Well now we have your critique of the film. Why was it propaganda? Why did you keep watching? And what's wrong with Hallmark? The message was supposed to be simple, it was that kind of movie, kinda like Disney. All Christians are neither good nor bad as all atheists are neither good nor bad. Individual people are good or bad, and even that is subjective at times.

reply

Nothing's wrong with Hallmark. I was just expecting a different kind of movie. I kept watching because I don't like to leave movies unfinished, always in the hope that they may improve at some point. I didn't like the film but it didn't offend me.

All Christians are neither good nor bad as all atheists are neither good nor bad.

My point exactly. In this movie all the non-religious or non-christian characters are portrayed in a very negative light whereas the Christians are portrayed as quasi-saints/martyrs.

And I thought it was propaganda because of the points I wrote in my first post. i.e. all the Christians are good, all the atheists (like the professor) and non-christians (like the Iranian girls father) are cruel and the "good people" should either stand up to them of get away from the; and don't get me started with the Duck Dynasty guy, what serious film has a Duck Dynasty guy giving advice?

reply

*spoilers*

Did you forget about the Christian girlfriend who dumps her boyfriend because he won't back down? Based on that alone, not all the Christians in the film are portrayed in a positive light.

~After enjoying that movie, I figured I'd drop by IMDB to read about all of its problems.

I will die before I get over that death scene of the professor where the preacher without examining the professors body concludes he bleeding internally to death and only has a few minutes. So instead of calling an ambulance they try to convert him to Christianity to save his soul. Will never get over that.

reply

Yes, that scene is just dreadful. Instead of offering medical help, calling an ambulance, or anything else a sensible human being should do in such a situation, the guy delivers a sermon to a dying man and then forces him to answer questions based on a particular religion. And then the Duck Dynasty guy appears on the video screen at the Christian rock concert? Argh.

"Hearts and kidneys are tinker toys! I am talking about the central nervous system!"

reply

To be fair to the preacher, he does yell to the other bystanders as he jumps out of his car "Call an ambulance". I believe he even yells it twice.

There is a lot of pure propaganda films from the other side. Evolution, the goodness of extra marital sexual relations, gay relations, etc etc. And when I say a lot of films, I mean a whole LOT of them. You may not see it in those films, but the discerning person does. Just because people don't say "this is an atheist movie" or "This is an evolution movie" doesn't mean that it is not and doesn't teach that propaganda. Atheism and evolution and so on are just seen as the default position these days so they don't have to say it as the Christians do.

reply

I'm curious what movies you think are evolution propaganda films.

reply

I've never seen an evolution propaganda film; I hope you come back and tell us the titles of these terrible movies. I wonder if there are any gravity propaganda films? I get sick of them ramming THAT down our throats.

This movie is entirely simplistic and one dimensional. By that I mean, a person goes to the theater expecting to see a movie with a plot, and layers, and interesting characters, and, like, plot development and stuff- and instead they're subjected to what amounts to a 90 minute Sunday School lesson. It's formulaic, and very one-sided.

Watching "Atheists Watch God's Not Dead" on youtube is pretty entertaining though. I highly recommend it.
