I really wish the Animus/Modern segments were left out...

These were so painfully boring it almost took away from the game. Luckily they were brief. The cameos of Rebecca and Shaun were nice. Melanie is so boring it puts me to tears...and Olivier...I just want to sink a figurative hidden blade into his neck and be done with it.

I sincerely, intensely hate the whole concept of the modern day Animus/DNA bullshyte this franchise includes.

Always loved the gameplay itself, but it's as if they sat down from the beginning and tried to think out the best way to remove any sense of immersion and how to most effectively yank the player consistantly out of the experience that is the basis of all computergames, by repeatedly reminding him/her that they're just playing a game.

The level of idiocy involved in this thinking is baffling. Wish to god they'd stop all this manure and just focus on the historical part, so one could actually enjoy the game.

IMDb-boards would be less confusing if people would mark their signatures clearly.

yeah I totally agree the modern day portion of the game really hasn't had the main focus.you just get bits of info, but the since they focus more on the Multiplayer now I just don't ever seeing the present gameplay being any better than what they did in AC3. I think if they should have a game that you played as a character in the first Civ and It be a prequel game. all in all I was doubtful of AC4 but it was an improvement from AC3 which for me was all hype and it fell short.

I would have been just fine if they had made Desmond's story an entire game itself and just worked through the Ancestors one by one til they got there. The constant interruptions to modern times are complete mood killers. I couldn't have given a sh%^-di%^ing f%^& about Melanie, that French guy, or anything going on in Modern times during Black Flag. Desmond was 'slightly' more interesting than the nameless guy you play working at Abstergo in Black Flag. The whole modern side was a total bore.

Meh, I don't necessarily hate the Modern day segments
In fact, they were the most intriguing parts in Assassin's Creed 1.
I haven't played Assassin's Creed 2 or revelations although I know the basic storylines )
I'll admit it went downhill in Assassin's Creed 3, because I simply didn't the The First Civilization storyline.

I'm glad they kept it to a minimum in Assassin's Creed 4 and hope they'll continue it to do so.

Then you know where I'm coming from. I wouldn't have minded a far off sequel completely focusing on Desmond Miles or modern assassins actually DOING SOMETHING other than strapping themselves into a machine as if it's life support. I like how Altair's memories played through Ezio and the discs in Revelations. They were less intrusive because you could choose when to do them a lot more than just 'oops, animus/modern time!' It's like an annoying commercial break. Tedious, boring, and makes the whole story a lot more superficial.

Otherwise, these are great games. And when in the past times I love them. I'll keep coming back for more, I just think the Animus and modern stuff could have been saved for a game or two in themselves.

I agree completely. In fact I just walked away from ACIV because I came to a modern level that was so frustratingly boring. I buy the games for the historical settings, not to see boring modern people do modern boring stuff.

I agree that it takes you completely out of the games and hurts the fun factor. They should either remove it completely, or give people the option to skip past them.

Yes, I agree. Being a nameless nobody in the modern setting is not as involving as when you were playing as Desmond in the earlier games (one of the main reasons I think the later games suffer because of this).
