Why was Milo projecting an image on the wall?

I believe, at least later on, the purpose was to have the projector actively projecting the camera footage recorded of the room he was in to not only give him an instant warning of when the Operator appeared, but also make it easier to spot him. As far as the initial still photo? I didn't really get why he set it up unless it was a live feed of his dining room?
