It meant nothing to the story as they could have just continued as friends trying to survive. Plus, Bullock was a quarter century older than the guy. This was an unnecessary diversion.

shareI have to agree with that. The terror and trauma that those people would have seems to me like it would preclude obsessing about sex, but there was also the other couple that stole the car.
I also have to think that if they had not gotten romanticly involved someone would be complaining that it was racism or something. Someone's always gotta gin up some annyoing angle on everything that happens in every movie.
They lived together isolated for 5 years! On what planet would two attractive people who are basically living on a deserted island not hook up?
