For those who read the book

Was it SPECIFICALLY mentioned in the book that the "creatures" cause the person to witness their "greatest fear," which results in them committing suicide?

In the movie Charlie is the first and only person to bring this theory up. However, hes just a regular guy who works at a supermarket. Now everywhere this movie is being discussed, here, Reddit, Youtube comment section; people are all in agreement that the "creatures" "cause the person to witness their greatest fear."

There were two deaths in the movie which go AGAINST this theory. When Lydia, the wife of Douglass, sees whatever it is she sees, she believes it is her mother, or has something to do with her mother and she doesn't seem scared in the slightest. I doubt her mother was her "greatest fear."

The second was Olympia. When Gary tells her to look at the creatures, she does, and then she says something along the lines of "well you're not so bad." You're...not...so...bad. Her greatest fear? I think not.

I have no idea. I guess we are to assume the creatures look like the crazy guys drawings but they are invisible to the rest of us? What do the crazy people see exactly that is so beautiful? Wish the movie would have given us a little more explanation

reply

Nah - most people when committing a suicide seemed in a trance - they didn't seem to be 'afraid'.

The woman that sat in the fire? she just sat there - no emotion, no pain - nada. Reddit theories are crap.

Nobody who checks this board has read the book?

reply

SPOILERS: The book is actually significantly different than the movie. However, there is nothing that mentions anything regarding people witnessing their greatest fear. In fact, in the book, those who see the creatures go mad and go after others, not just commit suicide. Animals are included in this as well. They, including birds, are not immune to the creatures.

is there anything to explain why psychos arent affected?

reply

Nothing specifically mentioned. You see a couple examples of people unaffected in the book, but nowhere near the caliber you see in the movie.

reply

Absolutely not. The prevailing theory by characters in the book is that the beings are something other-worldly that we cannot comprehend, and it drives people to madness.

Nothing about the creatures taking the form of our greatest fear is mentioned or even implied. These people must be thinking of the Boggarts from Harry Potter.
