I guess I'm the only one on this board that likes the show.

Briefly scanned through the thread titles and they all sounded bitter and hateful. I used to think Jeselnik was a dick, but through exposure and absorption, I've learned to find his sense of humor pretty funny (you can tell how much fun he has in his "Sacred Cow" segments). I especially love his interaction with the guests on the panel, which is pretty great if it's really all ad-libbed. Besides, it serves as filler until the similarly themed The Burn returns.

Tonight's episode was one of the better ones. The panel segment didn't feel scripted like it usually does.

He had me laughing tough with the DUI bit. When he asked the guy what he thought about driving under the influence of Marijuana and then followed it up with how else will pizzas get delivered I lost it. As a former weed smoking pizza delivery man that hit home and most of the people I know who did the job smoked weed as well. Any delivery over 10 minutes and I was packing one up...man I miss that job.

Doesn't hurt when you have Doug Benson and Rob Huebel as guests.

I love the show. He's enjoying doing the show as much as we are watching it, which is really refreshing. I don't know why people hate on him so much - they just don't get it.

IMDB is made up mostly of pretentious oversensitive idiots. That's the opposite of his target audience so of course they're going to flock here to attack him for not doing dry British humor or Woody Allen type comedy. As a modest insensitive genius myself, I love the show.

I can tell by your username you have a good taste in comedy...but this show isn't that good at all. Tonight's episode made me laugh two times...one being when Anthony made fun of Dave's hat..the other being when he said his dad had a disease. The scripted panel jokes they do aren't usually that funny. It all depends on the guests but this week with Joan and Dave was pretty bad.

reply

I thought Dave was on fire the entire episode, especially when facing off against Joan ("I'm not laughing, I'm crying upside down!"). Also, Joan had some great barbs, like the Amy Winehouse/Betty Ford quip and the Rosa Parks tweet. It really does feel spontaneous and off the cuff, you can usually tell what's real by the guests reaction to what is being said.

reply

Defending your tweets is the best part of the show for sure. I don't care for Joan Rivers at all but you have to respect her since she has been around forever. Dave I usually like and he had some alright stuff but nothing special.

The way you can tell that at least some of it is scripted is when somebody does a joke like the one about the toilet seat at Starbucks and the other person practically has a response queued up. I don't remember exactly what it was but I could tell it was all written. It is pretty much like Chelsea Lately where some of the jokes are written but the best ones are always off the cuff...like the two I mentioned Anthony had in my previous post.

I may be a little to critical of the show but that is because I really like his standup and just expect a little more from him. This show is still funnier than most of the garbage that is on this summer.

I'm not sure if you (or anyone else) is interested, but here's a link to a recent interview with Anthony on In Bed With Joan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJdVL2O7Nok

It shows a "softer" side to him, which made me respect him more and enjoy this season better than the last. You can definitely tell this stuff is all improvised and in the moment.

I've been a fan of Joan since watching a documentary about her a few years ago (A Piece Of Work, I think it was called). Even though her plastic face is scary, I think she is still smart as a whip at 80 and still entirely relevant. She was a bit out of her league on tonight's show, but she made it work.

Also, I think a big part of the reason the series seems scripted and responses seem to be "queued up" is due to the rapidfire editing of the show. I'm sure there is a lot of trial and error and fine tuning in post to get it to that final result. And of course Anthony has plenty of time to prepare beforehand, since he knows which topics are to be discussed. I'm not saying there isn't "cheating" going on here and there, but damn, people are so cynical about their shows these days.

Eric Andre was even saying tonight how he rehearsed his one joke several times. The joke about the white student union and how he started the blah, blah, blah and so an and so forth student union.

I am not saying everything is scripted but they know the topics they will be talking about and write jokes accordingly.

reply

If nothing else the Eric Andre/TJ Miller episode illustrated how laid back and unpredictable the format really is. Clearly, large portions happened without any sort of preparation (the Jeselnik mask, the penis whip out, the firecrackers) and Anthony struggled to maintain control and keep everyone on topic. This was by far the most out of control episode yet, and it benefited from that completely.

+1, well said.

I think a lot of people think anthony is like this in real life. They probably don't know it's a gimmick.
