GET A SPERM DONOR!

Go find a cousin or brother to give sperm to your wife! Then you can both raise a child that's related to both of you!

I don't believe that was common in the 1940's.

Based on how they were portrayed, I doubt they would have gone down that route. For one, there were no sperm banks. It was a completely foreign concept then. If she really wanted to, she would have had to sleep with the cousin or relative to get pregnant. Lastly, it seems like that Ira and his wife were only children. There was no mention of siblings. Also her family were in another country beside her parents.

"Also her family were in another country beside her parents."

Her family was NOT in another country! Her entire extended family was KILLED in the Holocaust.

For the OP: Sperm donation was not an option then. Most likely adoption was difficult because judges in North Carolina would have viewed them as "not white" and would not give couples babies that were "outside their race."
