Was it just me

or was Donnie Whalberg hamming up the South Boston accent just a bit as he narrated?

reply

It must have just been you because Donnie Wahlberg is from Dorchester not South Boston. South Boston is just one neighborhood in Boston and not everyone from Boston who has an accent is from South Boston. Because of the movies and Whitey Bulger people have gotten the idea that Southie is the only place where people are Irish and have Boston accents. I apologize for attacking you on this it just drives me nuts when people assume I'm from Southie or comment on my "Southie" accent. I guess it's because Bostonians are so clannish that someone not knowing the difference between one neighborhood or another would irritate us so much.

I got cousins from Boston none have an accent, just assumed it was limited to one area

Cousins are actual in-the-city Bawston or the suburbs? Dorchester, Southie, Charlestown, E. Boston (slightly different) are the insulated neighborhoods where they still speak the blue-collar Boston dialect. Sorry, but Wahlberg's is quite genuine. I changed my Southie accent when I went off to college - still drop the occasional "r" and squish my vowels. Oh, well...

It's not just you, he most certainly is and it's pretty distracting. I've never heard of anyone narrating a documentary "in character".
