I HATE STUPID PLOT POINTS

What kind of an idiot, smart enough to get the upper hand on two outlaws, puts his son in harm's way? Why the *beep* did he have his son, who was already scared, get close enough so the guy could grab him?

Then, it's a three gun showdown, bad guy tells him to get out, and leave his wife and kid behind, and he does it? WTF? What does he think is going to happen when he's gone? I tea party?

He should have shot them as soon as he kicked the gun out the window. But then, it would be over. Well, then write a better script. *beep* Do I have to do everything?

"Mortdecai is an embarrassment for all involved."

not entirely stupid, since it means they died because of his failure

Well, first of all - Jon didn't jump out of the coach, he was shoved out by Paul.
Secondly - the plot of this movie was so cut-n-dry, and had such cliche villains - I have to believe it was intentional, that the movie was a treatise on one man's determination and handling of death.
So, if you're looking for a complex plot and clever twists - yes, this is a stupid movie. But if you're looking at it from a psychological perspective, it's pretty cool.

Here's why you're mistaken: He shoots them both as I was rooting for him to do as well. The stagecoach drivers and his family survive. The stagecoach drivers are now active witnesses that will point him out to that jerk, the Colonel. The Colonel hunts him down and kills him and his family. Same end point except he dies too. Oh, maybe it would have spared his wife the rape but with that douchebag and his crew I doubt it.

BTW, I enjoyed the movie and my hats off to the Danes for the effort.

Jon's family would've testified on his behalf and his past history and character would've been taken into consideration, as would those of the men.

I think we can safely assume this wasn't the first time they'd commited a crime and they may indeed have been wanted by the law (hence their haste to board the coach).

Indeed, as we see in the film, just a little further along the trail, the two men shot the stagecoach drivers so they could have their way with Marie.

The whole thing was Jon's fault.

Through his inattention he allowed his family to travel with dangerous men and by his inaction he caused the death of his son and the rape of his wife. He deserved his sorrow but they didn't deserve what happened to them.

I agree, either shoot the two guys or make them jump out of the stagecoach. There was no reason to pick up the gun except for the script saying so.

But I didn't like the film anyway.

"I hate obtuse (if not stupid) Commentators"

freemanpatrick7 takes a very typical comment in which he blames the movie for either his obtuseness or failure to simply pay attention. We see this a lot.

Especially of the kind that's bragging "If it was ME, I would have...blah blah blah". Right - as if anyone would do more than freeze with fear. What explains being that out-of-touch?

1) He had a Split-Second for his son to grab that pistol on the floor OR a bad guy would certainly have grabbed it - and had a bad guy even tried, the risk to his wife and son would have been huge. Ever been in an actual emergency situation when you had to move fast, etc. and others are involved? Most people become total klutzes and even if not that, then 'any gun up for grabs' situation favors those familiar with guns up for grabs NOT foreign women or children. They had one chance only - and his son grabbing the gun was that one chance.

2) He was literally kicked out of the coach (WAG - "watch it again, genius").

3) Oh, 'should have shot them', huh? Obviously you live in a world of make-believe (yet criticize movie characters?). A death sentence because of an Attempted crime? OK, but you just worked like a relentless mad-man for 7+ years - and an immigrant in the US at that time would be throwing it all away by that decision to shoot. That much is certain, if you know history and what it was truly like for immigrants at that time. They had zero rights - can you say 'Chinese & Railroad'?

IF YOU WISH, we can follow you around and explain every movie to you if you've fallen asleep or gone to the toilet or whatever excuse you have for getting even these fundamental points wrong - Oh, I'm sorry, did your condescending, superior attitude prompt my own!?!

Conrrad, you are so fun to read. I just love your one note arguments.

Anyway, apples to oranges. You are comparing a trained soldier to an ordinary person.

What is your obsession with the immigrant subject? That had very little to nothing to do with the plot. All the people were being exploited by the creep, not just immigrants. But for some odd reason you keep hammering the immigrant point for no reason.

I loved the movie, but I did hate this part. He should have just shot the two guys. The guy just had his hands all over his wife and in her holy of holies. It was obvious the two guys were not going to just sit there the rest of the ride home. They were certainly going to do exactly what they ended up doing.

But let me guess? It was an immigrant thing, huh?

Exactly. Jon's decisive behaviour after being ejected from the coach is inconsistent with his indecision while on the coach. The film wanted to portray him as a reluctant antagonist but such a person wouldn'tve survived in such a lawless time and place...

You forgot to mention how many degrees you have and how long you have had a conceal carry permit.

Yes, you're right. I would not let my son get anywhere near the gun or the bad guy after what happened. But that's not what this movie is about. This is not a story or a character driven film. It is simply a series of so many staged affronts to spike the viewers emotions and make the taking of revenge so gratifyingly sweet.

The same stuff you see in good guy vs bad guy "pro" wrestling.
