Give this film a chance - it's a small masterpiece.

This film captivated me. When I trawled through the reviews, it hit me that people either love or hate it. There's no middle ground.

I've watched it four times, and I wished it were longer. The slow dreamy pace has obviously put some people off, but no shot is superfluous. Take the shot of Luke and John racing up the main street of the town. Jonah hesitates, looking at an antique bridal gown in the window of second-hand shop - Jonah sees Luke as his one and only.

Luke buys an old manual camera, to capture memories of the summer. In one scene, he trying to bring the view from the camera into focus, as if trying to see their uncertain future more clearly.

Jonah would not leave to go to College if Luke asks him to, but Luke won't, knowing that their small hometown is stifling Jonah. Luke tries to put on a brave face and be stoical, but heartbreaking sums up situation as he sees it, that once away Jonah will meet people far more interesting than Luke, who won't see Jonah as a nerdy outcast but love him for who he is. When Jonah leaves, Luke has lost him.

Despite the odds being stacked against them, theirs is such a sweet love story that you hope it will last.
