Thinking about doing an Everest expedition

I've never climbed before, just have done recreational stuff at the local bluffs, but Im really looking to challenge my body and mind. I do cross fit 5 days a week for mupltiple hours a day, my body is ready for a decent challenge. Plus I'd imagine I could get quite a number of women by telling them that I conquered Everest.

At any rate, anyone have any advice on best time of year to go? Gear to bring? Pack light or heavy?

I'd suggest not to do any background research, so it'll be more exciting: you should also bring loads of cigarettes with you because only lightweights need extra oxygen- have fun!!

reply

You need climbing experience...AND high-altitude experience. No guiding company worth hiring (read:a company that will get you not only to the summit, but back down...alive) would EVER consider taking a client with not only no high-altitude climbing, but no technical climbing period. If Everest is REALLY a goal of yours, I'd suggest going to a climbing school. Then, you'd need to have at least 4 or 5 climbs over 22,000 feet. Otherwise you're just asking for trouble. Oh...and just the permit itself to climb is outrageous. A guided ascent alone with permit is near $70,000. Can't go any higher than Base Camp w/o a permit.

reply

A permit is $11,000. Before this year it was $25,000, but a party of 7 could get a discount, which reduced it to $10,000 each, the discount has been removed, apparently to discourage larger groups, but the individual permit cost has been drastically reduced, as the Nepalese government want to encourage more climbers on Everest, by making it available to more than just the ultra-rich.

reply

The OP is clearly trolling with his get women comment.

But seriously, how do you come up with a detailed explanation only to get the price of the permit totally wrong? The cost of a lower budget climb with everything included is 70K and the permit itself is only 11K. Really shouldn't send people in the wrong direction if you don't know what you're talking about.

reply

What I was talking about...You fool, is the permit with the guided trip asshat lol. And if the op is going on one person's post alone...from IMDB no less, then I'd be scared for them. I figured it's a troll post but also figured I'd have some fun.

Just quoting you there. Plus most expeditions don't require technical climbing experience as you stated. That's the reason why many experience climbers have an issue with the number of inexperienced people on Everest.

reply

Im not trolling. The cost is obviously going to be a problem, but Im well financed and have also set up a FundMe page to get the process rolling.

Any other exercise regimines I should probably get into doing to get acclimated to the
extreme conditions that the mountain offers?

I've always said I wanted to either dive down and see Titanic or climb everest. I just want to test my limits.

Plus it will make for a good picture of me on the summit for my Tinder account!

Is alcohol allowed at the base camp?

reply

Try Whitney, or Rainier first. Then re-weigh your decision on Everest. I've climb a bunch of stuff in the West. I would never even consider Everest. Why, one may ask?
A. I like living
B. No desire to be stuck behind a bunch of knuckleheads with O2 masks for a day, or many of them.

---Listen, ..do you smell something?---

reply

I thought Whitney and Rainier would have more tourists than Everest.

I've climbed Longs Peak 4 times and I remember the astronomical amount of tourists on that climb. I was hungover from partying in Estes park and still passed most of the idiots.

reply

Sure there a people on those two, but they have long seasons. Everest has a narrow window of opportunity in May. It lasts for a few weeks at most. Thousands try their ascent in that timeframe... Line up!!
If you want a rugged challenge try Denali or Aconcagua. Just the approach on those takes days.

---Listen, ..do you smell something?---

reply

How cold is Denali compared to Everest?

reply

Sneak to do it and don't tell anyone until you get back.

reply

any other tips?

reply

Bring a jacket and some boots. Other than that you can just "wing" it … it's not like you'd need actual climbing experience or anything like that. Good luck.

and sunscreen...

reply

True - definitely sunscreen and floss … always floss, he'll thank me later.

I'm pretty sure there's better places to ask questions like this than IMDB haha, it doesn't bode well for your preparedness and research capabilities! trolling?
