wild tales was robbed!!!

how IDA ia a superior film to WILD TALES is beyond me!!

how SON OF SAUL is superior to the vastly under-rated and un-nominated COURT is also weird.

i guess some message boards use the holocaust connection but i also think we live in an age where awards are given on the hype and explanations (often online or overheard) about a film's imagined greatness as perceived rather than as contained in the film ... the things people imagine are contained in a film rather than its actual contents (or lack of)

ebert used to say its not about what a film is about but how it is about it....films can be about themes issues ideas but the ideas themes may not come through in the filmmaking. the film-maker may be devoid of skill and may fail completely at exploring an issue. that can only come from knowledge of the tools of film, light, color, sound, editing, storytelling.

i've always felt lesser filmmakers with a poorer skill set often (not always) favor films about social issues -- slavery, holocaust whereas the more skilled ones work in genres with storytelling and the larger themes about society's problems etc are hidden in the subtext. of course sometimes a greatly skilled director like spielberg takes on an issue (schindler's list) and the results are extraordinary.

anyway awards have always been averse to the finchers, hitchcocks who hate dealing with an issue head on. GONE GIRL on the surface is a convoluted plot based thriller but it's also just a film that explores marriage in all its craziness...but fincher wold rather explore it through entertainment, through mystery and the thiller format as hitchcock often did through the suspense format. this to me is just more rewarding and layered and lends itself to repeat viewings even after one is familiar with the plot.

After all that typing to complain about "the things people imagine are contained in a film rather than its actual contents," you mentioned exactly zero about this film's actual contents.

Ida doesn't "favor" a social issue. It doesn't deal "with an issue head on." It explores the character, Ida. There are several social issues that add layers of emotional resonance in her story. History is not resticted to the past, but exerts great influence in the present - and on this girl. The story is also a clear and highly unique example of the coming-of-age genre, with a notable blend of mystery.

Based on the emptiness of your complaint, and that you missed the basics of the film's "actual contents," it seems your critical skills could use some work.
