Why did Allistar hate .....

*SPOILERS*

Miles?
He genuinely hated him even though Miles had been so nice to him?

Look into his brother's story.

Yeah his brother was a Riot Club legend and president and he got his old room that Miles gave him, but that shouldn't make him hate Miles?

But what do we learn about the brother's later "career"?

So I know it's been almost a year since you asked this but here goes. The reason is never explicitly stated but there are little clues throughout the entire film. Alistair is clearly living in the shadow of his "legendary" brother (his father telling him Seb was top of the college; the Riot Club saying Seb was the best president the club ever had; being introduced to the Riot Club as Seb's little brother), and this is something he's clearly insecure about, especially since he didn't go to a "top-end" school before Oxford (he says he went to Harrow, which is at the bottom of the list of "acceptable" schools for membership to the Riot Club). So he feels the need to prove he's just as good as his brother and that influences pretty much everything he does in the film. Not to mention he has a very solid worldview - that the upperclass should be the upperclass and everyone else should just do as they're told and not complain (his speech in the pub just before they all go out of control). It's also briefly implied that he's very socially awkward with anyone who isn't part of the elite, and particularly around girls.

Miles is pretty much the exact opposite: apparently not feeling the need to prove himself to anyone, sure of who he is and where he stands, went to Eton, more of a socialistic worldview which in turn makes him easier for the majority of people to get on with, and seems on the whole to make friends fairly effortlessly. In fact, the first time they meet when Miles offers to swap rooms with Alistair, while yes any rational person would just take it as a friendly gesture, rubs Alistair the wrong way since it's clear he's busy using the issue of the rooms as a means to assert himself to his family (saying the smaller one is fine and asking what if he doesn't want his brother's old room) and having Miles "come to the rescue" as he did inadvertently throws Alistair right back where he doesn't want to be - in his family's shadow.

Tl;dr Alistair most likely hates Miles because Miles is, in essence, everything Alistair wishes he could be.

Someday I'm gonna make a movie then laugh watching people over-analyse it
