A waste of time sold on the back of a lie. (Spoilers)

Watched this last night, and for the most part it wasn't too bad.

I consider myself agnostic. I don't like religion as it has been shown to me, and I don't believe that god exists. I also don't believe that there is no god - I just take things as I see them.

I watched this and caught on fairly quickly that it was based on the Rapture story from the bible, but I figured that maybe that wasn't necessarily a bad thing - a lot of people believe that, and as a basis for the story, it could have worked quite well.

In this case, I don't think it did.

I believe that as a basis for a horror film, religious stories are very well suited. They are stories that many are brought up with, and many more are at least familiar with, and on that basis provide a framework for storytellers to build their narrative without a load of exposition to tell people the "rules"

In this case the characters spend the whole movie running from the demons (or whatever the hell they were supposed to be) and right at the end, as they realise that they are attracted by faith and belief, rather than use that information to escape, the last two decide that they are going to affirm their faith regardless?

WTF? What happened to trying to the survival story that the rest of the film showed?

Add that to the extremely derivative nature of the film, both in terms of plot elements pulled from other stories, and visual effects which looked to me to be highly reminiscent of so many other films, from the Matrix to Skyline with a healthy dose of Coverfield thrown in, and by the end of the film I just felt that the whole thing had been a waste of time sold on the back of a lie.

I know...

So I'm left wondering... what's the point of this, "Rapture?"

So in the end all humans get killed? And what about animals?

And when the world has no humans left, what's God's purpose then? To rule mankind in "heaven" only?

I'm not entirely certain of this, but my two cents:

The point of the rapture is to reward all the good people who do have faith, while getting rid of the bad element of the non-believers. The way I see it - correct me if I'm wrong - it's comparable to the flood (Noah's Ark). A cleansing. So with no humans left and all the 'bad' humans dead, God can do whatever the hell he likes with the world. He can repopulate or it is just the end of time (as all religions have).

As for the animals. I'm guessing that as pure beings, so to speak, they were all raptured as well. In the news videos we do see a whole lot of dead fish.
