aren't there any dead cows in this movie?

Maybe by that late in the war, the cows had already been slaughtered for food?

I dunno, but the shots of dead horses in war movies and documentaries are upsetting me lately, and I'm not a horse person or anything, it must be rough on those who are..and stuff like 'war horse"..
