What was the "ultimate girl cult movie" of the '90s and 2000s respectively?

In the Season 3 episode, "Lucky", Erica and her friends watch Troop Beverly Hills (while also suggesting Adventures in Babysitting and Pretty in Pink). If Troop Beverly Hills was the "ultimate girl cult movie" of the '80s, then which movies fell under that category for the next two decades respectively?

Clueless

The Craft 1996 or Clueless 1995, Mean Girls 2004 or The Devil Wears Prada 2006.

According to Ariana Grande, the ultimate "girl cult movies" of the 2000s are:
*Mean Girls

*13 Going on 30

*Bring it On

*Legally Blonde

I can totally see Legally Blonde being a prime candidate. It's Chloe Grace Moretz's favorite film and I once had a female acquaintance rant and rave about the film, recommending it to my twin and I, since she knows we're very impartial and like to watch a lot of movies. So, there's that too.

none of those are cult films

For the '90s, I would add or suggest Drop Dead Gorgeous and Never Been Kissed.

Oh yeah, Drop Dead Gorgeous. It bombed in theaters. Knew a few girls from Minnesota & they loved it. Figured it was just a local crowd pleaser because the movie was set in MN. Not so. It does have a wider fanbase:

Fun fact: the movie's writer worked BTS on The Simpsons during the glory years. She even voiced Amber Dempsey.

Only if you were 10 years old. Dirty Dancing was the movie for teenage girls like Erica in the 80s. In the 90s it was Titanic and in the 2000s it was Twilight.

A "cult" movie suggests a smaller yet intense fandom. Blade Runner, Idiocracy, Big Trouble in Little China, Rocky Horror, Ender's Game, Fight Club, Hudsucker Proxy, Donnie Darko, Harold & Maude were all cult movies.

For 90s girl movies, maybe Buffy? The movie wasn't a hit but laid the groundwork for the popular TV series.

I agree with most of the ones mentioned here:

Clueless
The Craft
Mean Girls
Bring It On
Titanic

But I think it depends on when you were born - examples:

Edward Scissorhands
Pretty Woman
Scream
Moulin Rouge

And I also think you'd have to include movies that were popular overall:

The Sixth Sense
The Blair Witch Project

Looking it up, Troop Beverly Hills was released in 1989. It really feels solidly like a product of the 80s. My first thoughts in response to the OP were Wild at Heart & True Romance. But both were a bit too edgy to be "kid" movies. Edward Scissorhands is a much better suggestion.

Still, I'm shocked that all 4 of these movies were released within 1 year of each other. Seems like the 90s got a lot darker & fast. Everyone wanted to believe kids were precocious, little adults like in My So Called Life. Probably why it's so hard to think of a good, kid movie from the first half of the decade.

Hocus Pocus?

Probably this.

scream isn't. it was a box office sensation, made 100 million in america and they made 3 sequels after it which were all huge.

reply

I have to admit, I didn't realize it was so commercially successful at the time.
