I love this show

Yes.... it is the same thing over and over again. Bev goes too far smothering her kids, then she realizes it and apologizes, then everyone hugs at the end.

But wasn't that also true for all of the great sitcoms? I love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Golden Girls. Gilligan's Island, Betwitched, and even Seinfeld were all "formula shows."

What makes this show great boils down to three things:

1. Great writing
2. Great acting
3. Great attention to detail

Hah I just came here to say the same thing. Just watched the dinner episode and yeah, the writing is what does it for me. I haven't put a whole lot more thought into it than that, other than feeling like it helps to be the same age as Adam is now. A look at our generation as kids, you know? All the eighties stuff makes for great nostalgia.
Yeah in fact, I think I'm going to download the series and start again from the beginning, haven't liked a show this much since Malcolm in the Middle.

I love this show too. And you're right about it being the same thing over and over again. When I first watched this show, I didn't like it, but I watched some more episodes and it grew on me. I honestly don't really sympathize with any of the characters when something bad happens to them because they're all mean to each other, except for Adam and his grandpa. Like, I can't stand Adam's older siblings! They always act like entitled brats! The whole reason I watch this show is because I love the 80s, and it is HILARIOUS. I just can't stand the way the kids in this show talk to their parents. It's awful

This show is great. At the start of every episode I tell, "oh sweet a nintendo episode or sweet a back to the future episode
All stuff I loved in the 80's. I was a nerdy dork who liked to use a video camera when I was a kid. It's like reliving my childhood
