Why does Erica suddenly care about Geoff?

For the last three years, whenever Geoff would show he was slavishly devoted to Erica, she'd either ignore him or blow him off (and I don't mean in a good way). Now, suddenly, because he has an ugly girlfriend, she's all weepy and tormented over him? That doesn't make a lick of sense.

I can understand the "you don't know what you've got till it's gone" scenario, but she only showed a glimmer of like for him last season. And this year, she can't even get through a videodating tape without an emotional breakdown about him? Come on.

And considering how enthralled he was about Erica, I find it hard to believe he can switch his allegiance to that other girlfriend. It's almost like a Bizarro version of The Goldbergs--that what's happened the last three years doesn't really count, and we're now witnessing an alternate world.

To be honest, I dislike the plot line greatly. I feel that it's very tired and has been done to death. I'd rather they show a little bit of realism. Girls do go through what Erica is experiencing with the jealousy but to say Geoff is her true love? Ridiculous. Plus, Erica may be cold but for her not to be getting attention from other guys is way unreal. I wish they'd can the story line. Good friends is all they should ever be.

Die Erica and Geoff Schwartz theme, Die!

As I was rewatching last season, it was amazing how there was this slow drip from exploring Erica as a complex character to tying everything back to Geoff Schwartz, and two episodes in and they're whole hog on that for some reason.

It is too cliche. But it is a element in lots of 80-90s sitcoms, dorky guy chases girl she doesn't reciprocate. Then either they finally get together, or he finds someone else she regrets not grabbing him when she could have.

Screech-Lisa Saved by the bell
Urkel-Laura Family Matters
Jazz-Hilary Fresh Prince

Out of respect to Jazz, I wouldn't put him in the same category as Screech and Urkel. Hillary didn't like him not because he was dorky but because he was low class. He lacked class.

reply

I was focusing more on the chase

well you have to understand Erica is evil and shallow...having someone you could command at all times worshipping and adoring you is an ego boost until they wise up and realize what's going on which is what Geoff did...and given that his new girlfriend actaully shows interest and emotion towards him that isn't demeaning it's very believable that he'd be loyal to that other girlfriend..face Erica maybe physically hot but her personality sucks.

reply

Erica is not evil... that would be his controlling girlfriend who's a psycho.

reply

I think Erica liked Geoff the whole time but was in denial about it. Then when she accepts it and wants to be with him, he meets someone else. She's upset with herself for blowing it.

reply

I actually came to the board to start a similar topic. I don't buy it at all. I like Geoff and I did like the idea of them dating. But for Erica to do this complete 180 doesn't jive with me one bit. I would understand her coming to the realization that he was the one, but quickly getting over it. I just don't think this fits her character one bit how they are playing it. I gather this is setting up something later in the season. Personally I thought they should have done something with this last season.

I don't necessarily mind Erica not having BFs throughout the show's history. In real life guys would be breaking down the door to date her.

The show should have done this way more subtlety.

reply

I'm hoping that this whole 'Erica is hot for Geoff now that she can't have him' phase is just trolling by the writers, because I would be so very upset if they were serious.

------Jesus loves you, but only as a friend.------

reply

I dunno--they seem pretty serious to me. Remember, Beverly's rolodex had Erica hooked up with Geoff as her true love!

This literally has come out of the blue and is so contrary to what has been established before. Erica always struck me as an independent lass who called the shots, so all this mooning and crying over that geeky dude is completely out of character. And, of course, we know what will happen. Geoff will realize that Erica loves him, he'll break up with his ugly girlfriend (and she'll go back to Suburgatory, where she belongs), and he and Erica will find true love. Ugh.

reply

I think geoff and erica will get together.

reply

Ya think?

reply

She definitely looked better on that show. She had some meat on her bones. She lost way too much weight and she lost her impressive bust. A tragedy. Reminds me of Jennifer Connelly.

reply

lol I wish Suburgatory was still on.

reply

I wish they never turned Erica into a Barry clone. It was fine the first 2 seasons and all of a sudden, a complete 180 degrees in character. So unlike the first two seasons of Erica...

reply

Wasn't Barry celebrating his 16th birthday in the first episode of The Goldbergs? That would make him 20 now, but we're to believe he's still a junior in high school?

reply

Either you've never been a teenage girl or you have forgotten what it is like being a teenage girl. There is no logic when it comes to boys.

reply

Wow. That's really insulting to teenage girls.

reply

Once I saw Geoff listed as the right guy for Erica in Beverly's yenta rolodex, it was clear where this storyline was going.

It's just a question of how long they drag it out until they get together. I'm thinking either the Valentine's day episode or they drag it out until the season finale.

reply

Reminds me of Sue and Darrin, from The Middle.

reply

Who cares if it's insulting? Do you pretend reality doesn't exist just because it's insulting?

reply

Don't you mean, YOUR reality? Or do you speak for all teenaged girls?

reply

Yeah, I speak for all teenage girls, every last one.

reply

I was a teenage girl once. Comes from experience.

reply

Not every teenage girl acts this way. Come on. And she's a senior in high school, not some googly-eyed freshman.
