really like this show but.....

Adam Goldberg goes through different years of the 80's and doesn't stay in 1 particular year a season, And yet he is getting older and taller now-Growth spurt

Just it gets inconsistent, As then other episodes go back to earlier years and yet he has grown up and some in same year as first season when he was smaller and had squeaky voice so it is stupid why they do that as I like continuity

Thoughts?

And what other TV shows do you watch that are also set in the great decade the 80's :-]

reply

I didn't like the inconsistency at first either but I got used to it. It's just a ridiculous, over-the-top show and a giant mash-up of all things 80s. Because the show is so silly, I've been able to accept the anachronisms. After you accept it, you can finally enjoy it.

reply

It's never bothered me. Each show starts with "It was 1980 something," then a memory is shared as an episode.

Hi Mike- you must be new here,  welcome. Yes, this comes up a lot. Here is a piece of an article in Time magazine interview that Adam did.

It's done intentionally. According to Adam: "...or you could get fancy and put the whole thing in a literary-theory frame; the show is about the unreliability of memory, the haze of nostalgia. It takes place in the reverie of its maker, in whose mind the past is every year of his youth at the same time. It takes place not in the historical 80s but in the concept of the 80s!" This reminds me of my vision - I am very near-sighted and without my glasses, in the dark, every point of light is a circle of color, all about the same size, all at the same distance, although some are in front of others - like splashes of paint on a flat surface.

it's not like they have the kid playing Adam acting like a nine-year-old. It does skip around, but generally stays within a reasonable/believable age for the character.

What I'm saying is, If they then do another episode of when he didn't have his growth spurt and higher pitched voice and mean't to be one of same years in the 80's from season 1 and they did a flash back of that in S4 it is inconsistent/Mistake

As he is getting older not other way around, They should just keep in real time-So it's on 4 seasons so far....

Anyway what other TV shows do you watch that are also set in the 80's

reply

The point of the show is that it is not set in any particular yr. It jumps around the decade and even dips its toes into the 90s. Any particular ep can touch on things from '81, '84 and even '89. This is not like The Wonder Years which was done in a linear fashion. I am a little surprised that this question keeps cropping up since the show is now in its 4th season.

reply

It's not a question it is a statement, I'm saying if they do a a flashback scene in season 4 to a year from S1 you can tell the boy has got older and would be a continuity problem

reply

I don't recall many, if any flashbacks in this show, but that would be an issue with pretty much any show.

The point of the 80-something is to allow them to make whatever 80's reference they want whenever they want. Otherwise they'd have to be sure to make 10 seasons to get all the references in that they want.

Not if the actors were adults and there was like a 5 year time jump wouldn't matter, Or with other family TV shows like Family Ties, Growing Pains, The Crosby Show, Punky Brewster, Full House, Who's The Boss, The Hogan Family, Married with Children, The Facts of Life, etc etc you saw them all grow up on screen- They are all classic TV family shows

reply

Ding ding ding ding. You get it. Adam has stated he wanted to do it this way, so he could tackle any 80s reference and not be a slave to a particular yr for a season. Some people will get it and some unfortunately will not.

reply

The very fact that this is constantly being discussed here tells me that the concept hasn't been too successful.

reply

I don't know of any other newer shows set in the 80s but if anyone can recommend some good ones, please do!
