The Greatest Musical Ever Written Ep (Phantom of the Opera)

This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I was in high school when Phantom came out. It was a huge sensation. Probably my fav ALW musical. I still recall the uproar when the actress (ALW's wife at the time) who played Christine did not get a Tony nomination. I thought it was ridiculous that she didn't get nominated. Dave Kim as the Phantom was a very good touch. Lainey got to show off her voice. I will also say that it wasn't exactly cool back then for guys to do theater or even take theater classes. This is going to sound very bad I know. But if you were a guy and you did it, people questioned your sexuality. That's how it was in those days. So that part of the episode did ring true.

Ok. Here's some of the bad stuff. I thought it was ridiculous that Barry got jealous over Adam and Lainey acting together. Come on. It's Adam. I couldn't see Adam stealing Lainey even if he was the last guy on the planet. Then they tried to cover it in the end by saying that Barry was actually jealous of Adam belonging to a group which he was not good at. No no no.

Then we go to the home ec part. This storyline I really had issues with. First of all Beverly goes into the class all guns a blazing. She wants to get her point across and then she fails everyone. There is just no subtlety here at all. Erica has gotten good grade her whole high school career. I think she deserves a bit of a break in her senior yr. But no we are supposed to feel sorry for Beverly when she had her power trip and was called on it. Someone mentioned this earlier in the season and I am getting to that point now. I am tired of the whole someone gets their feelings hurt and then the other person or people apologizes to them even if they are not totally at fault. There is no grey area. And many times it is Beverly who gets her feelings hurt. She can be a real ball buster with a filthy mouth, but she also seems to have very thin skin. That formula needs to stop happening or they need to do it better. The kids know they need Beverly. They have shown it in the past many many times in storylines with her feeling not appreciated and the kids groveling back to her. I just don't know why she got so upset in the ep. I think the principal, Erica and the PE teacher just wanted her to ease off the pedal just a tad. A good teacher can make any subject enjoyable and even fun for the students. She did not and then she thought they were basically attacking her as a homemaker. Such BS. That annoyed me to no end. Then Erica apologizes. SMH.
