'The other Adam Goldberg...' joke

This joke needs to stop. It's been in almost every episode of this season and simply isn't funny anymore. It was barely amusing the first time.

I love the show but am getting really tired of that.
And no, I'm not "the other" Adam Goldberg

reply

Oh, this is so definitely true. The first time, it was tolerable. But it's mentioned every frickin' episode! Obviously, the real Adam F. Goldberg has a bug up his a$$ about the "other" Adam Goldberg. Why else would he feel the need to mention him constantly?

Reminds me of the long-departed Phyllot and how he constantly went on and on about a poster named Yokoflippi. Got very tired, after a while.

For me, The Goldbergs is very rapidly going down hill this season. They're already running out of 80s touchstones and are going to begin scraping the bottom of the barrel, soon. What's next, I wonder? Have they done a Madonna or Michael Jackson episode? How about an Indiana Jones episode? A War Games episode? A Karate Kid episode? A Cosby Show or Roseanne episode? Probably all of these and more. I can just see Barry wanting to dress up like Roseanne!

reply

Is the other Adam Goldberg supposed to be actor Adam Goldberg? That Adam Goldberg is 6 years older than Adam F Goldberg and is originally from Santa Monica. That Adam Goldberg definitely didn't ever live in Pennsylvania.

I haven't ever understood that whole shtick.

reply

Yes, it's that Adam Goldberg. I think he was in Saving Private Ryan.

reply

So what is the story with Adam F's problem with Adam Goldberg, the actor?

reply

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that Adam Goldberg--the actor--wanted Adam Goldberg (the kid filmmaker) to add the "F" in his name to differentiate between them. Maybe the request came in the form of a legal letter or something. Whatever it was, it was enough to catch itself in Adam F. Goldberg's craw. That's why it's constantly mentioned on the show.

reply

Here's kind of what I know.

Adam F. Goldberg has to go by a different name than Adam Goldberg because of the actor guild. Everybody has to gave an original name and if someone in the guild is already using that name the new member has to come up with an original name to go by. It's why Micheal J. Fox put the J. In his name, there already was a Micheal Fox in the actors guild.

When the Goldbergs got on the air, a lot of people thought Adam Goldberg, the actor in Private Ryan was behind this. He quickly was annoyed over the confusion and started a twitter war with Adam F. Goldberg.

Adam F. Goldberg said he was aware of the other Adam Goldberg and thought it was cool there was an actor with his name. He said he never had any problems with the other Adam Goldberg and actually understands his frustration, but didn't understand why he had to make it personal.

Putting another Adam Goldberg in the show is just poking fun at the situation. Making fun of the fact that Adam has to now go by Adam F. Goldberg. If you notice the show often makes fun of real life situations. Like using real life baseball player, or the class clown, or Dave Kim.

I could buy that if everyone--or mostly everyone--was in on the joke. Apparently, not everyone is, or you wouldn't have to explain it.

So, if the majority of the viewing audience just doesn't "get" what Adam F. Goldberg is doing, then the so-called "joke" falls flat. And repeating it every episode doesn't make it any funnier.

Great point, Mary!

If people don't know the story behind the joke, they can just google it.

So, you're saying that this Adam Goldberg reference is so obtuse, the average person must Google it to understand the joke?

Wow.

reply

[deleted]

A lot of people probably find ithe joke funny, whether they know the story behind the joke or not.
A lot of people have lives and don't give it this much thought or really give a crap.
A lot of people are not as whiny and scrutinizing as IMDB posters.

A reference can't be obtuse. People are obtuse. People, for example, that incorrectly use the word obtuse when they should have said obscure.

One second, you're saying, "a lot of people are not as whiny and scrutinizing as IMDB posters," and the next, you're whining about and scrutinizing the misuse of the word "obtuse."

Strikes me that you're something of a hypocrite. But that's ok, a lot of IMDB posters are. Oh, and they're obtuse, too.

reply

[deleted]

Get back to school, little one, so you can be less obscure, I mean, less obtuse.

Why are you being so obtuse?

reply

I'm afraid of posting things like this, because what if they're working on it but then a post like this screws up their plans? So I'll make it a spoiler:

What if the other Adam Goldberg appeared on the show as the father of the other Adam Goldberg! Mad about Adam picking on his son. Maybe get in a fight with Beverly - Murray would be confused by the whole issue.

Sorry, but that's about the dumbest thing I've ever read, heard or even considered. Thank God you don't write for this show.

Sounds like Walter Mitty's engine

Sorry, but that sounds really, really dumb.

Perhaps that's part of the reason they're hitting it so hard. They're getting more and more people who don't get it to look it up so they understand that there are two Adam Goldbergs in real life.

It's the actor Goldberg that has the problem. When the show first premiered, He had something derogatory in his Twitter bio and I believe asked the Goldberg behind the show at the F to his Twitter handle.

I don't know why it is a joke this season, because it happened quite some time ago, but it was definitely the actor who started it.

The "other" Goldberg may have started it, but Adam F. Goldberg is definitely keeping it going.

reply

a) It's kinda funny.
b) It takes screen time away from Erica mooning over Geoff and one can't be too cross with that.

I think it's funny. But I have a sense of humor :)

I get the feeling he wants to mention it every episode this season? It is wearing a bit but hopefully will only be a temp thing.

reply

Hasn't been temporary, so far!

reply

Well it's only been half a season.

Wow, I can think of a lot of things that are annoying as hell, and this issue isn't even on my top 1000 list.

"The repetition is what makes it funny" - I understand running gags, they can be brilliant. See: Arrested Development, for some of the most sharp and clever uses of the joke format.

Repeating the exact same joke in almost the exact same wording almost every episode just stinks of weak and lazy writing. I expect more from this show.

It clearly thinks it's really clever and witty and the writers are obviously desperate for the 'other Adam Goldberg' to hear it, hence their overuse of it. But what are they expecting to gain from him hearing it? I doubt he'll care.

reply

I think they want to say it enough so that the other Adam Goldberg becomes The Other Adam Goldberg. Adam F. Goldberg gets to be the first Adam and the other guy is just that, the other guy.

AGAIN!!!!!. And this time with a twist from Erica.

reply

I was going to post that but I can't remember what she said and the episode isn't on:

http://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/episode_scripts.php?tv-show=the-goldbergs

yet (although Modern Family's new episode is)(it was easier to paste my link, that I keep in a file of such links, than to spell the name!)

What did she say?

Edit: it showed up Friday morning - ha ha!

reply

Not sure who to reply to here but I don't think it's supposed to be funny. I think it's supposed to annoy Adam Goldberg...not from Saving Private Ryan but from Dazed and Confused...the dork who gets his ass whipped by that male dominant mf'er Clint.

reply

Same Adam Goldberg (same guy in Dazed and Confused and Saving Private Ryan).

reply

Ya I know. It was a poking fun at the man. People should remember him more from D&C than SPR.

reply

Sure, but also Hebrew Hammer.

reply

It is supposed to be funny and annoying. I love it. This Adam has made it his mission to torment the other Adam since last season. The actor Adam is supposed to be an ahole who doesn't like to be associated with this Adam. I can't get enough of it.
