So, is Derek Waters an alcoholic?

I guess he'd have to be, to do a show like this.

reply

He could never have pulled this show of if he was.

I've seen functioning alcoholics achieve a lot. Case in point, Dan Harmon.

That being said, I think it's pretty obvious to anyone that watches the show that Derek has to do a tremendous amount of talent wrangling, occasionally with talent that's impossible to wrangle, so while it does show him drinking with the guest, there's not a chance in heck he's drinking as much as the guest. I have no doubt that he's drinking exactly what you see him drink on camera- and not a drop more- because the tipsier he gets, the harder it will be to keep the drunk actors in line.

While it may look, on the outside, that this show just involves giving an actor a story to tell and a bunch of drinks, there's way more work involved. You try getting someone really drunk and then have them do what you want them to do. You might as well be trying to herd cats. Derek works hard- as does the rest of the crew.

reply

Also pay them a good amount an it is probably not that hard...

reply

It's filmed over a series of months. I don't think that Derek is drunk when they are editing or writing.

reply

no one is actually drinking during this - the ones in costume are not the only ones acting.

reply

I think he meant that there are 13 episodes a year, so thats only 13 days out of 365 where Derek and the guest need to actually get drunk on camera. Derek might get drunk for the story part, take the next day off, then have a couple weeks to do the rest of the work for that one episode without drinking.

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

reply

Actually he gets drunk 3 times an episode for 13 episodes which i didn't think about cus I've been drinking all night and watching drunk history. But getting drunk 39 days out of 365 isn't that much either.
Cheers! I'm gonna go drink more now.

Man, conspiracy theorists never cease to amaze me with the stuff they have conspiracy theories about. I can't believe someone actually came up with a conspiracy theory that the story tellers on Drunk History aren't actually drunk.

reply

Saw Drunk History Live at Bonnaroo; can confirm that they get absolutely LIT.

What a baseless accusation.

reply

Well, he definitely drinks. I guess whatever your definition is.

reply

He said in an interview, on Seth Meyers I believe, that he doesnt drink while doing this.

Only a small portion filmed is, if any at all, of these people actually drunk.

Dont tell me you're innocent. Because it insults my intelligence and makes me very angry.
