At halfway point in the US, really cooking with gas

We are at halfway in the US now, and Elise ending up in the drink really cracked me up.

All 3 versions set a new high, I mildly prefer this French/British version for topical portentous motivation and how it builds and builds, for the fast pace and nasty twists, the obvious big budget, the aerial shots north and south of the tunnel, the depopulated industrial busy-ness at each end, the large force of low-key well-resourced cops, the finely tuned fascination Karl & Elise have for one another, and the boatload of nasties getting their whacks.

I love the French/British The Tunnel for all the same reasons you describe above. It's fast-paced alright. And the cinematography is amazing.

I haven't seen any other version, but I definitely agree with this:

the finely tuned fascination Karl & Elise have for one another

They have wonderful chemistry, and they are both fine actors. So they are a pleasure to watch.

What I deplore about the PBS airing is the censorship of the dialogue and the blurring out of stuff. I got so fed up with it that I went back to the DVDs instead (which I already owned; this is my second viewing). Like did they show the really really hot sex scene between Elise and the bartender in Ep. 5?

PBS not only bleeped out bad words in the subtitles but also the spoken bad words in French. I feel so protected.

No, we saw the couple finishing up and that was all.

I am a little surprised at the censorship because I figured that PBS was airing The Tunnel at 10:30 pm instead of earlier so more could be shown.

Nonetheless, we are enjoying the show a lot, particularly the interactions between Karl and Elise.

Wow that's too bad. It was really really hot. Like super noisy hot.

But the scene is on the DVDs, right? Might be checking out the complete version later.

Yeah, I definitely recommend the DVDs, if you can play R2 DVDs.

Also, recently a friend got the DVDs and he chose the full set including S2, and he said that S2 is very good and that it continues on with Karl and Elise (on another case I presume) and also either wraps up or explains some of the unexplained elements of S1. So that's something to consider as well if you will be getting the DVDs. I'm thinking of getting S2 based on what he said.

I got the S2 DVDs and have just finished watching them. I enjoyed that season as well.

Also, there's a lot to be said for simply re-watching the series or season (on DVD) -- since a re-watch allows you to make sense of things that flew by too quickly or didn't make sense on the first viewing.

True. I picked up things I missed the first time when I watched season 1 again. I'm going to watch season 2 again and see if the same thing happens. It's a fantastic series.

Yeah, I don't generally buy DVDs of TV series, but this one was worth it. The storyline, and all the performances, and the dual locations, are wonderful.
