Had it Not Been Cancelled

Would Robin Williams still be alive?

reply

Yes.

Being cancelled was one of the things that caused his depression to spiral out of control.

I tried watching but the show was truly crap.

reply

How would you know that?

reply

He doesn't know that.

Robin's struggles with drug addiction and depression were public knowledge long before this show was even green-lit. So blaming a canceled show for something that was set in motion decades ago is a bit ridiculous. Throw in his recent physical ailments and it's easy to see why this happened.

reply

I think the timing was just an unfortunate coincidence. Clearly Robin had a number of health problems all coalescing at the same time. While he probably did feel bad about the show ending, it's unlikely that it "caused" his depression to go out of control. Cancelled TV shows just don't work that way.

I thought the pilot was incredibly mediocre but that the show got much better as it went on. The cast worked together well and the dialogue was zippy and often clever. If anything, it clipped by a little too quickly sometimes to appreciate.

Ironically, with its ratings, on any other network it would have been picked up again for a second season.

Either way, Lewy Body disease is Lewy Body disease and was likely to take its toll whether the show was renewed or not.

reply

Who knows, but I think if the show had been renewed and Williams died anyway, the network would have cancelled anyway because they lost one of the stars on the show. (Didn't it become some kind of rule after NBC's Newsradio tanked when they replaced Phil Hartman due to his death/murder?)

It isn't a rule--some shows have gone on without a principle cast member since then, notably "Eight Simple Rules" that lasted a few more seasons after John Ritter died. But "The Crazy Ones" would not work without that character/actor certainly.

reply

We'll never know for sure, but I would say things would be different if it had not been canceled. They would have to be different b/c it's a different scenario than what actually happened.

But I'm sure he would have committed suicide eventually (or at least attempted it).

reply

What if this show was renewed for a second season and he still did what he did would the show be circled around Sarah's character?

reply

I wish the show was renewed then he killed himself so Sarah can be the star of the show. She really needs a break somewhere .

Yes, Sarah Michelle Geller deserves to earn a break from the death of a beloved colleague.

Do people seriously think before they write?

The show might have distracted him from his demons, but I'm not so sure. I couldn't help noticing he had many great movie roles and then they started decreasing in place of stupid humor movies. It's hard to say.

reply

Not to say his newer roles are all stupid humor movies. A few were good! I just think it's possible the decline of great movie roles all the time, the show failing and his Parkinson's diagnosis all contributed to his suicide along with any mental illness or sensitive nature he had. I wish he hadn't done it, but even if the show had stayed on his Parkinson's would have gotten worse and made him more miserable. He would have probably committed suicide once people realized it on the show and it would have been hard to hide once it got worse. Michael J. Fox did do a tv show for a little while after his diagnosis because his medicine helped some of the involuntary movement. It became too hard for him at some point though so he quit the show and chose to do voice acting and later did a role with his diagnosis written in for th character. Robin could have done that too but it's likely the show might have even made him commit suicide if it had stayed on if he was ashamed of his body changing while the show aired.

Who knows?
No one can say with any certainty if he would still be alive or dead.
He had early Parkinson's and maybe he would have still killed himself even if the show was still on.
And no one can blame CBS for making RW kill himself. The only one who is 100% responsible for that is RW himself and no one and nothing else.
