What happened to the men left behind on Terror?

As a huge fan of the snow horror genre, I absolutely loved this show. I haven't read the book yet, but after finishing the last episode I was left wondering.... what happened to the small group of men who decided to stay behind with the ships?
I find it odd that Crozier, after deciding not to rejoin civilization, wouldn't have gone back to them.

Also, I wonder does the book provide any explanation on to the nature of the beast and the tongue cutting ritual?

Most likely sailed a few more miles from the desertion point of the previous group before deserting the ship entirely when waiting around to no avail for help to arrive. Could be they too knew of the contaminated food supply and need to hunt for wild game. Then they more or less suffered the same fate as the first crew desertion.

You're probably right. It took 2 years for rescuers to make contact with the Inuits. If they hadn't heard from those men by then, then there's obviously no way they survived. Plus, if I remember correctly there was a prologue at the beginning of the show saying both ships and all crew disappeared, hence no survivors.
