I just finished seeing the last episode.... personally I think plumbism had little to do with the death of the beast .

I was under the impression that it didn't kill the men to eat ..it wasn't hunting the men for food**.......he actually ate very little of his victims flesh wise...in the last attack I think luckily (for Crozier) it swallowed part of one of its victims' along with the chain that Crozier's wrist was also attached to .... while the beast still had part of Hickie's body between its jaws Crozier , with his foot used Hichie's top part of his body as a foothold and , pushed/blocked it back into the beast 's mouth and at the same time he pull the chain swallowed towards himself and the beast choked .

It was also weakened by a shot wound or two possibily during the attack.

I could be wrong but I think that' s what happened.

** When the beast killed Captain John Frankilin it bite off his leg , dragged and pushed him alive down the water hole...it didn't drag him off to eat.

The beast had no trouble finding and killing food...remember it hunted a seal which it gave to Lady Silent.

The beast was an Evil Spirit that " preyed " on its victims' souls ...he "ate" fed off souls.

I'm gonna conclude that the souls were tainted as well.
The beast was dying from a combination of Lead poisoning AND consuming "tainted" souls.

The Tuunbaq was killed mainly by the joint effort of Thomas Blanky and Francis Crozier, those true explorers of the arctic. The monster was hurt inside after it swallowed Blanky who covered himself with bended iron forks. "Lady Silence" and an Elder Eskimo were on their way to heal it, then it was too late after Crozier countered it as sunshine62 explained.

Interesting.

Just a theory but I was wondering if Goodsir's suicide and the mutineer's consumption of him had something to do with the Tuunbaq's death. Remember some of the mutineers were vomiting when the Tuunbaq was attacking them? When the Tuunbaq ate them, maybe it got poisoned itself. And that bit about Goodsir telling Crozier to only eat the soles of his feet... Maybe the poison was of a type that did not settle in the tissues of soles of the feet? Odd idea, I know, but I am just putting together some unexplained bits of evidence to make a theory. Goodsir was very careful to insist that Crozier only eat the soles of his feet which he said were the toughest part of him. Maybe the poison settled in the fat cells of the body or something.

Well if you think of the long list of what the Tuunbaq’s been through — he’s been shot at by a cannon, he’s been hit by rockets, he’s been torn up inside with forks, in addition to eating a lot of lead-riddled bodies and at the top of that list is the spiritual element of this, I mean, he’s eaten a lot of Western souls that are not typically part of his diet — and then when he finally gets to Hickey and consumes that soul, that is definitely the straw that breaks the Tuunbaq’s back. It is probably so toxic that he tries to cough it up, he tries to vomit it up, but Crozier’s there to keep Hickey’s torso right plugged into his mouth. And, yeah, we definitely wanted it to feel like it was a list of things contributing to it, in the same way that there are a list of things contributing to the men’s deaths, but sure, at the top of that list, comes the horrible, curdled soul of Hickey.

According to some reviews I saw on You Tube it was the cumulative effect of eating the men who had lead poisoning and botulism.
