look at Poussin in Wikipedia:

the theme is the realization of death in life.

The "golden age" of Greece, the ideal for everyone who studies the classics, when everything and everyone was fine.

Poussins' famous painting (of classic people looking at a tomb)is titled:
Et in Arcadia Ego.

That is, death, destruction, is also in "arcadia", the lost, perfect golden world. Death comes to all. Nothing is "ideal."

This painting and it's message would have been well-known among University types of Morse's generation, and perhaps by the locals in Oxford, as well.
