Chief Superintendent names

Throughout the Morse/Lewis canon, the Chief Superintendent's name is always an adjective: Strange, Innocent, Crisp, Bright. Is there some connection which I'm not seeing or is it just the writers being playful?

I notice that too. It seems that the writers are just being playful for no specific reasons, and you forget to include Moody, the Chief Superintendent in the last series of Lewis. And who is Crisp?
