shareIt's the plotline paved throughout the second series about someone within the police force stealing evidence, but never resolved.
shareEvidence was disappearing; in the previous episode 'Trove', it was a murder victim's notebook that went missing. Strange says to Morse about potentially joining the Freemasons (though as far as I can remember he never mentions them by name) - "I've a meet and greet this evening with a view of being initiated into a certain ancient fraternity."
Who the ring belonged to and who took the evidence has still not been solved as of S4.
You've got to know the rules before you can break 'em. Otherwise, it's no fun. - Sonny Crockett
"Nocturne" made it pretty clear that the ring belonged to the antagonist Terence Black, and that it was the one passed down from his ancestors.
shareThe same significance as the missing notebook being handed to a Mason at the end of the previous episode.
