why didnt ed put all the effort of the shack into the very cave he was staying in? make a wall maybe even a window and a chimney. it seemed high enough to avoid flooding when the rain season came.
. i just didnt get leaving the cave for a one sided shack to sleep on the ground?

also, i think the goat was "conveniently" tangled for ed without him knowing.

Agreed on the goat, even he seemed more doubtfully surprised than thoroughly flabbergasted ...

Regarding the cave suggestion, i think it would have been a pain to gather all the materials & make numerous trips, as you say, it was pretty elevated.
