Mission failed!

I enjoyed the show but if his mission was to see if he could survive for 60 days on that island then he failed. He needed antibiotics twice and a medic once. If he was actually alone he would have been bad shape after the first few days!

I don't think so. I think he would have made it.
But a production team can't jeopardize his health obviously.
But I'm with you that it changes things a bit mentally. He does have that phone as a way out, that gives you some confidence to go on. He knew he wasn't gonna die alone on that island.
Still, he did it as real as possible and didn't cut any corners. My hat off to him for doing this well.
Obviously he came there with a plan to make a shelter and some other stuff, but at least it wasn't scripted like so many other survival shows.

I wish they would have made more episodes out of it. There is far more to tell. Just as with his trek along the amazon. But maybe he doesn't film enough each day to fill more episodes.

That's debatable. The thing is: if he had been a true cast away, stranded without any possibility of contacting the outside world, without the "exit door" of a medical kit and emergency help in case of severe illness, his chances of survival would have been very much reduced. As he stated himself, what took the biggest toll on him was being alone. The desperation and the hopelessness of a situation where a positive outcome is not guaranteed can result in a deep depression which, combined with fever, extreme pain, malnourishment, and dehydration, can lead into a downward spiral of no escape.

I am not saying he certainly would have died, but I am not a hundred percent sure about his survival under truly extreme circumstances, either.

Of course, knowing that there is no-one but yourself to help you survive, no "plan B", can also work as an extra charger. It can work both ways and I am absolutely convinced that survival is ultimately a victory of mind over matter. So, if the mind fails, if negative emotions get the better of you and you spiral into a vicious circle, the end can be quick in coming. With a life-threatening infection and no antibiotics, the end can come even quicker, positive thinking notwithstanding.

And, by the way, would he have had to live off the island in the strict sense of the word, all those plastic bottles, the "knife", "cooking pot" and even the bow would not have been at his disposal. A major problem in so many ways.

So, yes, I think he has proven that he can survive in this setting, on this island, but I doubt he would have the same succes rate on another island and without the emergency plan.

Considdering the amount of plastic drifting in and on our oceans ,I doubt there are many islands that don't have plastic bottles or even plastic sheets on their beaches.
I don't know all that much about survival but from what I've seen on TV when people try to survive on some island ,even if it is only for a couple of days, there is always some stuff on the beach that helps them in some way. The guys trying to survive always remark on it how much stuff is just thrown in the ocean and ends up on the beaches.
And for some strange reason flip flops make it to these islands very often.

Good point. But then the whole concept of "can I survive marooned on a desert island" is flawed from the get-go. Whether you succeed may depend on choosing the "right" island in the first place, i.e. one near enough to currents that transport usable debris to the shore. And, of course, it has to be in a climate that will not kill you off in your first night with near (or below) zero temperatures.

All in all, it was an experiment with a lot of tweeking of the variables. Nonetheless, I enjoyed watching him struggle through and respect his incredible stamina and courage.

2 courses of antibiotics indeed is a lot, and infection in that climate, coupled with dehydration and lack of food would have turned deadly, fast. Ed's no slouch, he walked the length of the Amazon, so the fact that he even went into that medical kit meant that he needed it. Still great show and I hope he keeps adventuring and doing more shows.

yep exactly, he failed, he used antibiotics and assistance, and then he says he didn't just survive but he thrived when he only did so well later on because a goat got itself caught up, then he compares himself to a caveman starting from scratch but we all know he wouldn't have lasted more than a week without all of that trash that washed up

the guy did really well and what he did was admirable, he made naked and afraid look like a complete joke and I really enjoyed the show but I have yet to see anyone thrive in any survival situation like gilligan or the swiss family robinson

they should have made this into more than 3 episodes for sure
