What was the real symbolism of the goat?

I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Nora saves the goat at the end and it starts eating the messages and she gets mad at it then feeds it normal food which it eats.

I don't know if its meant to be intentionally obscure or if there's another meaning behind it.
