Episode 203

I'm surprised that with all the "This one is annoying" "That one is annoying" threads, there aren't a ton of "Whitney is the most annoying, anorexic, spoiled brats I've ever seen in my life" threads.

Oh, there have been plenty of "Whitney is the most annoying, anorexic, spoiled brats I've ever seen in my life" threads. But because there's been little of Whitney in S3, whereas there was heaps of her in S2, there hasn't been much to say about her recently.

reply

Thanks. I know I'm really late to the party, so that probably accounts for it. I even went back to the first thread IMDb has for this show but it's still mostly current stuff. So whereas the other characters are just garden variety annoying (except maybe for Helen's parents and Oscar), Whitney is downright over the top/nails screeching down a blackboard/really wanna just slap her in the face annoying. (Not advocating any sort of violence...but dayum...she's annoying.)

Pretty rude to assume she had anorexia because she's thin. That's a mental disorder you don't throw around.

reply

Rude? Thin? Are you blind?

Is it ethical to employ an anorexic actress to play an anorexic character?

Some people are naturally very thin, but I think if they are bony, there's a good chance they are anorexic.

reply

Great question and accurate, astute observation. All I kept thinking about was Calista Flockhart every time Whitney was on screen.

reply

Yeah, some people are naturally slim and some artificially so.

Jennifer Carpenter (who played Dexter's sister on "Dexter") has been called anorexic but she doesn't look it to me. She is naturally slim but looks muscular and healthy. She has a bosom and it doesn't look obviously fake.

Then there is the bag of bones. Their arms are skinny with little muscle. Bones pop out of their shoulders and elbows. Rib bones are prominent on their upper chest and they have no breasts unless they get them artificially; that's always incongruous, to see big round breasts over a chest of protruding ribs. So fake.

My theory is that the latter type women were not meant to be as thin as they are trying to be. They might be compensating for a perceived figure flaw like naturally wide hips or full thighs, which doesn't look as good on TV as a thin lower body.

In trying to reduce their thighs to what they want them to be, the cost is they have to reduce their upper bodies to below healthy levels. They can't "spot reduce". Their upper body loses muscle before their lower body loses all its excess fat because that's the way their body is meant to be.

The actress who plays Whitney might well be borderline anorexic by her appearance.

reply

Also, from her biography I think I recall that the actress who plays Whitney was a ballet dancer. They are notorious dieters.

reply

Yes, body shaming is body shaming. The actress very likely doesn't suffer from anorexia. Some women are naturally very thin. Ex. Olivia Wilde.

reply

Having been on this particular board since 2 months after the airing of the pilot episode, I have to say there have been an overabundance of posters commenting how they'd like to slap some sense into Whitney. Arrogant, spoiled brat and anorexic were comparatively modest slights; there were some truly unkind cuts. Some have even said she seemed to be a refugee from a coven of depressed witches!

 One of the few laugh-out-loud lines on the show.

reply

I cannot stand Whitney and her idiot Furcat wtf! I'm hoping they cut her out

reply

Ok. Hold on.
It is totally fine to call Whitney annoying. She is. She is also emotionally immature and selfish.

But to body shame her or to make fun of a disease as serious as anorexia is shameful. Grow up or educate yourself. People with anorexia cannot magically cure themselves, just like any other sufferer of any other disease.

Plus, Whitney's character has never shown to be anorexic. So I'm assuming you're using anorexic as an insult to the actress because she is thin.

Thick or thin, shut your mouth on others' bodies. It's none of your business.

reply

You've got some very serious issues.
