Confusing, disjointed , wasted cast

Not very good. Paltrow needs to,concentrate on characters rather then panorama. Story line jumped around and did not make sense. Waste of talented actors. Thumbs down.

It would take too long to explain all. one example is 1st time we see flem and Ernest together is at auction. Other then Hoult's over the top scowling..no idea why bad blood. In fact they shake hands and seem pretty friendly. Next time we see them , again Hoult over the top acting..goes *beep* and yet Ernest is calm. Still no idea what the problem is. This was crucial to the story and too many unknown unknowns. There are other..kodie going to boarder? What?

This is my opinion and seems to be common to others. Cast is not used to best of their abilities especially Micael Shannon and Elle Fanning.
Glad you like it.

I tried to give place to find the reviews but This website does not like competition and censored the post. Just google reviews on this movie

The bad blood is because Ernest took Flem's fathers land. It is explained and referred to several times in the film. Ernest obviously didnt like Flem for sleeping with his daughter.

Sadly I agree with you, I knew that reviews were mixed and hoped I´ll like it. This is what happens when the script isn´much interested in characters. What a shame to waste top notch cinematography, moody music and Michael Shannon

Yes, this sums up the problems of this movie. I think that Young Ones is a perfect example of how a mediocre filmmaker can ruin a story with a very good premise. I am sure that this movie could have been great if it would have been written and directed by someone like Jeff Nichols.

There isn't anything "mediocre" about YOUNG ONES. And Jeff Nichols? He's directed only a few films. TAKE SHELTER was a pretty good film (with an unresolved ending, which some people didn't like), though I don't see it was being any better than YOUNG ONES.

Well, in general I agree with the points previously made by Moviefanner, Tuco-23 and most of the reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/young_ones_2014/. The cinematography of this film is great and there are also a lot of interesting ideas which could let to a really great movie. But I have a few problems with the editing and the execution of those ideas.

When I watch a movie, I am usually more interested in character development than on all the big picture details. So in this particular case I wished there were more scenes of the four main characters interacting with each other and that those scenes between them would be less rushed than they are on the movie.

I know that Jess Nichols hasn't done much movies. But I think that he is very good in potraying characters of the countryside of America and his movies are also usually more focused on characters. So I am convinced that he could have made a much better movie based on the same concept. Not forgetting the fact that he also has a very good working chemistry with Michael Shannon.

The film was relatively straight forward. If anything is "disjointed," it's your post.

reply

No. Your comment is disjointed.

I did not find it 'disjointed' either (?)

Or 'confusing'...what was confusing?

Or a waste of the cast ~ totally enjoyed watching them in this ~

Movie was actually pretty straightforward. Doesn't mean it was all that good, but I'm not seeing why you thought it jumped around and didn't make sense.

reply

yeah, i don't really agree

i think the relationship between hoult's character and shannon's character is explicated fairly well. i was a little confused at the starting but it all does come out fairly quickly.

what did you want? a voice over explaining who everyone is with relation to each other?

reply

I agree. I wanted to like this and I liked the synopsis of this when I read it on Netflix. When I watched it, I felt it jumped too fast to a different part of the story which make sense why a lot of people claim it made no sense. I loved the look, the setting, and the music but the human side of the film I could care less about. I really believed they wasted a good cast here. 5 out of 10 or 2 and half stars for me.

Nailed it. Way too much money was given to a director who was too young for this kind of material.
