What you would have done if you were Locke

Me:

1. Stayed at work the day of the pour

2. Broke the news to my wife later when there would be the best moment.

3. Visited the woman and the newborn son, gave her child support (he has well paying job) spend time with him...

reply

Honestly? If I were Locke, I think I would've stayed at work. So I would probably have ended up losing my family and self-respect and causing Bethan immense grief. I would likely have been angry that Bethan had kept the baby and resentful that she was having it on that day of all days, even thought that's not at all her fault. Assuming that Bethan isn't the type to call my wife and try to tell her the truth, it's also possible I would never work up the courage to tell my wife that I'd cheated on her. In summary, I would choose the path of denial.

reply

If you were Locke you'd have done exactly as he did...or else you'd not be him now, would you!

reply

Well, OP probably meant if we were in his situation. But we often say, "If I were you ..." don't we.

So, when exactly is the best moment to tell your wife you had a one-off with another woman and that said woman is giving birth to a child that shares your DNA?

At her birthday?

If I were Locke, I would have avoided having sex with my secretary. But then, that would make for a really dull movie... ;)

reply

That's the correct answer. Failing that, the best he could do would be to tell his wife as quickly as possible because the longer you wait the harder it gets. Like concrete.

1. told Bethan I would miss the birth but be there next day
2. finished the pour
3. waited for the baby news
3.1.1 did she die and baby live?
3.1.2 did the baby die?
3.1.3 did both die?
3.1.4 both are OK
4. if 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 carry on normal life
5. if 3.1.1 or 3.1.4 own up and tell the Wife and go see the kid
6. either way - keep your job

Yup, that would've been my plan exactly.

Still, I understand how a guy like Locke with his background and his hangups over his $%^&* father might feel an absolute moral imperative to be there the night his child is born.

reply

Yes, that's exactly why he had to do it. He had to go through the fire to defy the imprint of his father.

reply

My obligation comes to my family and work first, then my mistakes so if I was in Lockes position, I would have made the job work out and told my wife face to face the next day before visiting the hopsital to take the responsibilty for my mistake...she and the child would have survived without me in place exactly when the baby is born.

I agree. Locke is concerned that Bethany is 'fragile and unhappy'. Perhaps, but Locke did not make her that way and a one-time lay does not obligate him to her for life to ensure she is happy and has strength. That is the trouble with a mercy f$$$- it only occurs with basket cases and drama queens, neither of which are suitable partners. Seriously, does anyone think that having a child will actually be Bethany's 'chance for happiness'. No, she needs mental health counseling, and while we should help one another, all Locke can do by having any involvement with her is screw up his own life- now and in the future. She does not strike me as a fit mother.
His obligation is to Katrina and his boys, and to his employer, he did undertake to manage that crucial cement pour. . Those are long-term intentional commitments
