a very odd film (Spoilers)

this is quite an odd film in terms of plot. Firstly, why would Helen take the word of this guy who shows up with a bullet in his shoulder? And when the 2 guys do show up to kill him, the Tim Roth character just shoots the other guy dead for seemingly no reason.

She didn't take his word for it. She sat with her rifle until William (Speedman) came to. And then grilled him to try to figure him out. When she saw how weak he was, she put down the rifle and let down her guard. Later, when Helen tells Al she needs to get William into town, instead of waiting, Al takes off so Helen knows Al has gone to get Tom (Tim Roth) and that she could be in danger along with William. So Helen has to trust William at that point.

And when the 2 guys do show up to kill him, the Tim Roth character just shoots the other guy dead for seemingly no reason.

Yes, that was a bit strange. Tim Roth's character needed to shoot his gun to make Scott Speedman think he had shot Patricia Clarkson. But Roth could have shot the gun into the air, not kill his accomplice. Maybe Roth's character was going to blame the death on Speedman or Clarkson? Seems very strange to shoot an accomplice though, when he was there only to help you.

I wouldn't say the killing was strange. Basically Tom would have killed them all regardless (Helen as well) -no lose ends. I think he just got pee'd off when the guy tried to tell Tom what to do when he's the 'boss' (plus it's a typical Tim Roth thing to do ?)

When the guy came to see Helen speedman did say "if you let him in we're both dead" so he obviously knew how Tom operates
