ummmm

*spoilers* though it doesnt matter because you shouldn't waste your time on this if you haven't seen it yet.

im sorry but what was the point of this film? the premise sounded interesting, and then its filled with scenes that go on FOREVER of a widow thinking about her husband... on a boat... in the house...in bed...on a chair.... her checking her freaking phone every 5 mins to see if it had service--yet apparently she went up to that cabin all the time. i get if it had to do with the storm, but when the storm ended she kept trying to get signal. pretty sure you'd know hands down if you have celll phone service out there after going there for 10 years. LOL and saying this film is "drama/romance/thriller" ---no, it was none of those. there was no emotion or drama, there was no romance except for one unrealistic, out of nowhere makes absolutely no sense kiss between a dude and a woman old enough to be his mon. and this film is the complete opposite of a thriller.

and those sequences are boring. movies can still be entertaining with not a ton of dialogue or action but that bored me to tears and did not pull me in from the start. and i am someone who actually loves films with that kind of feeling. not a TON of stuff going on, but substantial context. failed miserably on that one.

then the dude shows up. random scenes that seemed like they were put together by someone who has no idea what they want happening in this film. her back on a boat....her tending to his wound all the time and them just sitting there....the relationship between them which didn't really exist. they drew some of those scenes out too long too because they were talking about virtually nothing.

they both just act calm and nonchalant for 90 percent of the film. they barely speak to one another----THEN ALMOST KISS.... yeah I am sure someone as hot and young as Scott Speedman would be romantically interested with a 60 somehing year old woman after one day of knowing her and them barely speaking and having no chemistry. movies like this can be rad and interesting to watch. this wasn't.

then the "big reveal" of why ended up there. it was so annoying how he wouldnt talk about it, and honestly, even though she became a bit more curious, she was really not asking him much about it at all. and when he FINALLY tells her, after shaking his head no no no which got so annoying btw, A BAR FIGHT? really? this is about a guy who somehow get washed up at his ladies boat house after a bar fihght and he accidentally killed someone and that guy dad is out for revenge? AND AFTER ALL THAT, their whole "ordeal" which never showed any real crazy worry or emotion, the freaking dad kills himself. woow what a twist!! come the *beep* on.

Oh, loved it when he says "Dont let that man come in here, he will kill us both"

LOL and he said it SO nonchalantly, didn't tell her to hide. Just "that man will kill us both but I am going to hide in the shower and let you make your own choice on if you let him inside or not. no sense of urgency to run, hide, anything. then the dumb bitc* lets him inside. gave the guy all the info of what really happened...oh but that doesnt matter, it wasnt even the guy out to get him. did Will THINK that was the dad? wouldn't he know what he looked like if so?

the rest for me is a blur because its the most boring "People trapped in a remote place where someone is there to kill you" kind of film. Like seriously whoever wrote the script needs to stop writing or learn how to create better character development, dialogue and intrgiueing characters and scenes. They barely spoke and when they did tye were monotone.

Its like some 25 year old putting together a film for film class---and the teacher would have ripped it apart. Were the people involved in all aspects of this film stoned, drunk or too tired to put any effort into this at all?

its been awhile where ive seen a movie SO pointless and so boring, to where I have to say "I dont think I can finish this..." ....."When is something going to happen. Even just interesting dialogue?"....."Can they just have a normal yet interesting conversation where one or both has a personality?"

I was watching with my mom, who gave it more of a chance than me----but I am sorry, after the first 10 mins i was bored, so of course like 25 mins in I am just on my phone bored as hell.

how did this movie get produced? and they are good actors too ---so it was the writer and directors fault for making this a snoozefest and a half.

So weird to say this with all the crap on netflix and the actors who were in this film, but it's one of the worst movies, if not the worst I have seen in a very long time. I'd rather watch a piece of garbage movie for laugh or entertainment value rater than watching a movie with an interesting plot, taking itself seriously and failing on every level. like seriously *beep* this movie lol. it actually frustrates me how bad it is.

oh and the ending made me laugh though. their little exchange, as if theyve been through so much together...........yeah......maybe if you guys said more than 20 words to each other, really got to know one another and had any kind of scenes where you're not vaguely talking to one another.

it had potential with the premise and actors, but the rest was a complete waste of everyone's time (actors and audience both)

just. wow.

I'm watching it, against my will at my parents house. It certainly shows that a certain generation will literally watch anything if it's on the television.

This is untenable. The scenes drag on with no purpose. Who is this writer? omg it's the director. No wonder. Just an endless series of nonsensical, self aggrandizing dialogue which fails on every front. Pointless exchange scenes. Pointless repetitive dialogue. Lots of telling with zero showing. NO HUMAN MOTIVATIONS.

Does show that Tim Roth is obviously a consummate professional though.

Oh, sweet death please come for me... it just keeps going.

reply

Yup. I am glad someone agrees. When I saw someone replied I was thinking "No way this person could be disagreeing with me, but it's possible." So I am relieved to see that you notice all the awful of the film I did. Thank you. And sorry you had to sit through it too.

reply

As an older person, I resent your "certain generation" comment. I will NOT watch just anything.

And this movie, ugh, I wanted to like it but didn't. Too much windup, no pitch. At the end (I kept watching, hoping it would get better) I was all, "What?!? That's IT???" Needed more Tim Roth, more suspense, and certainly more payoff.

reply

Never. It never got better! My husband started fast forwarding in hopes that it would get more interesting. It was very painful to watch.

I think it's odd that you start out saying 'don't waste your time on this' and then proceed to write a long drawn out synopsis of the entire film and your low opinion of it. Yeah, I watched this film and although the ending was a bit too pat for me and some of the plot was a bit predictable, I enjoy watching Patricia Clarkson. There, I've told you in just a few sentences my opinion of the film without going on and on about why I think EVERYONE SHOULD watch it or why you SHOULD NOT tell other people not to watch something when everyone should go ahead and view a film and decide for themselves what they think.

Lol, and also have the opinion to speak as shortly or lengthy as we see fit while explaining our opinions. If you don't want to read something you deem too long then why did you read it? I didn't force anyone to. Why should you be able to tell people how long our posts should be? All the while me not telling anyone to like or hate it. Just explained my thoughts, my way, which---I thought a forum was for?

Thanks for your opinion,
Have a good one :)

reply

Actually, I didn't read it all. You're right. You are entitled to your opinion.

that is not for you to decide. I know the husband was dead but he was annoying.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.

reply

LOL...enjoyed reading the original post but wanted to add, after rewinding the movie after reading the post, that the dad did not kill himself-she stepped out and shot him in the back with her rifle as he was about to shoot Will. Also, Will referred to the man as "dad" when he hugged him; someone mentioned in another post that Will was adopted...I missed that part where that was mentioned but it was a nice twist to find out the man he killed was the brother that he spoke of missing. I did lose focus a few times throughout the movie though, so maybe that wasn't actually a twist at all!

Haha yeah, see I totally was lost by then and "paying attention" but not really, so it makes sense I didn't see/hear any of that correctly. God, even hearing all of that again from the movie bores me to tears just thinking about it. I want to erase this film from my brain so badly. lol

I will watch anything patricia clarkson is in. I had zero expectations. Def not bad, but def implausible. About a million other ways this story could have gone. But i did feel chemistry between them, and i was shocked because scott speedman is a pretty average actor. Didnt hate him in this. Thought tim roth was super miscast, dashing english murderous suave dude, like he was a superspy, not even bothered he wanted to kill a person he helped raise. Eh. Too much for me to take.

reply

Those of your generation, have that type of almost nonexistent attention span. There is alot to see and feel in this movie, if you weren't "attention-span challenged."

Like I said, I am a fan of movies that don't need a lot of dialogue or action. This film just happens to suck. That's your opinion of the film, doesn't mean I am attention-span challenged, but thank you for the presumptuous judgment based on my opinion of one film that --- in my opinion which is valid as anyone's else's-- actually didn't have a lot to see or feel.

Wait what? Pretty sure Tim Roth (the dad) was shot by Patricia Clarkson in the back as he was about to shoot the young guy. He didn't kill himself. Unless there are two versions of this movie floating out there, haha.

But yeah, this movie had a lot of plot holes and just head-scratchers. Like, why did that random local guy Al get so involved with wanting to kill Tim Roth's pseudo-son? Just because...because what? He'd been in jail before himself so he was a tough guy? That didn't make sense to me. I didn't get that he had any connection to Tim Roth or the pseudo-son William besides just overhearing *beep* in the bar. And then when he realizes Patricia Clarkson was the one harboring the pseudo-son, he takes away the boats and agrees to go help Tim Roth come back and kill him (again, for some unknown reason). But he had to know they'd kill her too, then, right? Not to leave witnesses? And he was just cool with that, despite her having known him and his family for years? I didn't get his role in the movie.

And then why was Patricia Clarkson so gung-ho on saving/protecting William? She just accepted that Al and this random stranger (Tim Roth) were going to come and kill the young dude. So she decides to go all commando/Home Alone and try to ward them off and then kill them both herself (even though she wavers at first)? Why not just hide and let the others duke it out. Because she was so protective of him now. But again, she'd have to know they wouldn't just let her go. So was she initially willing to kill them just to save this stranger she didn't know well at all. That was weird to me too.

It had potential but didn't reach it... And come on, have some balls and make William more of a bad guy. Not this adopted son who got in a rage and accidentally killed his amazing beloved brother because the brother "put his hands on a women"...so he's all like this saintly killer. Make him actually more bad than that, throw in some danger. But again even with him being a saint, it didn't make sense why Patricia just automatically decides to go all out, killing if needed, to protect him.

And we're just supposed to accept that these two dudes, Tim Roth and a random local, are going to calmly ride out there on a boat and kill people, like that's a normal thing to do? They were so calm about it. Was he supposed to be in the mafia or just some really cold-blooded person? And how had he missed actually killing him the night before after shooting him...and then somehow lost track of him...huh...

reply

They just could have taken the bad guys boat, and left the Island, when the bad guys Went looking for them.

But that would be too easy I guess. And too realistic...

Man oh man you must have a lot of time on your hands to write an encyclopedia about something you dont like-if you do like a film is it a kinda war and peace piece so to speak

Another dumb part of the movie was when the lady was dumping a wheelbarrow full of tools into the lake. wtf, most people in a similar situation would be using every resource available to improve their defenses. I thought she might throw the rifle into the lake as well !

So what did they do with the bodies ? Call the cops or dump them in the lake ? The movie spent so much time making coffee they could have given us a clue about the aftermath.
