It's not as good as the previous two series, but still worth a watch, if only for the period detail and the good actors/actresses in it.

But it has fallen pretty I'm afraid to the BBC's dedicated zeal to portraying the gay lifestyle and all of its injustices in period shows.

In modern BBC/ITV shows gay characters are usually just characters in the story, as part of the every day life of today.

But when the BBC or ITV get their hands on a period piece they go into an absolute frenzy of breast beating go to ANY lengths necessary and take up as much of the narrative time, pushing out all other narratives streams, in order to drive home (in case somebody didn't already KNOW) what it was like for homosexual men before the 1967 act.

WPC 56 is just another casualty of this period drama trend.

The BBC and ITV just cannot help themselves can they. It could be done with less heavy handed effort--sure include it, but this has been the single dramatic narrative for series 3.

There was a lot they could have focused on and had Briggs struggling with his situation, without making it the whole central story complete with full-on tragedy ending.

They are just obsessed. Grantchester anybody? The list goes on and on.

Although the new WPC Annie Taylor is OK (and well played by Claudia Jessie), this series really missed the feisty character of Gina Dawson, and of course Jennie Jacques’ good looks. I also thought that Charles De’Ath was under-used. In the first episodes he was shown to be suffering from his injuries, and this could’ve been expanded upon, however his character became one-dimensional by the end. There were too many sub-plots as well.

I do hope that there will be another series though.

Yes, too bad about De'Ath. He's right proper villain.

And now he's been reduced to chugging some kind of late '50s happy pill, or pain pills (to which he'll undoubtedly be addicted by the time series 4 rolls around).

And the new DS Sawyer is a great character--as the "outsider" himself he seemed to accept a woman PC more easily than the other dyed in the wool chauvinists in the cop shop.

This series had a few great scenes--my favorite was Fenton the corrupt cop on the take at every turn and the sexual harassment knob and vile Chief Constable Coulson, a truly vile human being, questioning Briggs and telling him what an eembarrassment he was to the uniform!

Pot...kettle. Obviously played for ultimate irony. But it still worked and enraged me.

lol 'Although WPC Annie is OK' She is bloody brilliant! the other actress was just too weak and looked very awkward. The new girl is excellent and real! Look forward to more seasons with her. It's like a brand new show now. Didn't rate JJ (Gina) at all

I am stunned to see so many of you missing the Gina person! The actress is quite attractive and I don't blame her for the role, but dumb! How many times do we need to see her do something completely dangerous, or just stupid, then land on her feet. Sleeping with the enemy.. bright girl, sleeping with a married officer, her "cuteness" wore off quite early for my wife and I. However, I must say that am quite used to the girls in Scott and Bailey. They would have eaten Gina up and spit her out.

I'm with you, really surprised at how everyone is crying over Gina leaving, the new WPC is a breath of fresh air and the girl can ACT!!

reply

Have to disagree with you there I'm afraid! The first two seasons were very weak! Love the new lead actress! she's a lot stronger and feisty. looking forward to new seasons with her!

The key difference between the characters of Gina and Annie is that Annie is from a family of policemen - her father is a retired copper and she has two older brothers serving in the force. So she's grown up around policemen, been around them her entire life, and therefore (unlike Gina) isn't the least bit intimidated by her colleagues or senior officers.
