Additionally, if you care to share, what exactly is the story? He gets into space and contemplates for 2 hours?

He landed in the Mars successfully. That is the end.

Also earlier it is established that NASA has stocked piles of various supply in the Mars through the unmanned missions. So once he arrived, he should be able to survive for a while. Since the journey takes 270 days, Earth needs to send another spaceship with a working water making machine as soon as possible. I suppose there is enough drinking water stocked in the Mars for one year.

It is not at clear that our astronaut hero is going to live on Mars successfully.
I would also say it is not even for sure he even lands on Mars at all,

It is certainly an ambiguous ending.

He lands on Mar and goes for a walk.
