Quadraplegia and Suspention of disbelief

So in the Movie Will's Caregiver Nathan tells Lou that Will is paralyzed from His upper chest down. Obviously the writers did not do enough research because if this were true Will would be on a Ventilator like Christopher Reeves was. Also he would not have been able to feel the tag in his shirt irritating him either!
